For the fourth time in 11 years, the Lady Bears reached their sport’s biggest stage—the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City—as part of the team’s historic 2017 season.
Before the start of each season, Bears head coach Steve Rodriguez privately considers the potential of that year’s squad. As he approached the start of the 2017 season, his second at the helm of the Baylor baseball program, he again evaluated how far he thought the team could go.
Baylor’s highly decorated men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their lengthy run of postseason appearances in 2017 under head coaches Matt Knoll and Joey Scrivano, respectively.
Baylor won its third Big 12 championship with an 11-7 victory over Oklahoma State at Baylor’s Willis Family Equestrian Center in late March. It was the second Big 12 title in three years for Baylor, which defeated TCU 10-9 in the Big 12 Championships opener to set the stage for the title-clinching win.
Only two universities had both men’s and women’s golf teams reach the match-play portion of the NCAA Championships—Baylor and the University of Southern California.
Baylor senior pole vaulter Annie Rhodes claimed her second straight conference title in the event May 13 at the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Last year, Baylor Acrobatics and Tumbling did something no Baylor team had done before—win back-to-back national championships. This year, they extended their historic run by adding another.
Baylor Athletics enjoyed a banner year in 2016-2017 as 17 of the school’s 18 varsity programs reached postseason.
