Career Experience

Stephen C. Wells has served as pastor of South Main Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, since 2003. A three-time graduate of Baylor University (B.A. ’90, M.Div. ’97, D.Min. ’03), he also serves as an adjunct professor at Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. His previous work experience includes serving as pastor at Highland Colony Baptist Church in Ridgeland, Mississippi, at First Baptist Church of Marks in Marks, Mississippi, and at Chilton Baptist Church. Additionally, he served as minister to youth at Calvary Baptist Church in Waco.

Board Experience

Wells served for six years on the board of directors for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). He has served on the executive committee of the Mayor’s Task Force on Police Reform in Houston, and he is currently the co-chair of the Houston Police Chief’s Multi-Faith Advisory Council.

Awards and Honors

A member of the first graduating class of Truett Seminary, Wells received the George W. Truett Distinguished Service Award from the Baylor Line Foundation in 2021.

Baylor Philanthropy

A fifth-generation Baylor graduate, Wells serves alongside his wife on the Give Light Campaign steering committee. His direct financial support of Baylor has included gifts to the George W. Truett Theological Seminary Excellence Fund. Wells previously served on the board of advisors for Baylor University Libraries and on the Truett National Campaign steering committee. He also was a Student Foundation representative during his student years at Baylor. 

Church/Christian Mission Affiliations

Wells and his wife are members of South Main Baptist Church. In addition to serving on the CBF board of directors, he has served on the Executive Director Search Committee and the Committee on Nominations to Institutional Boards for the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
