In a time where Christianity is under attack and the easy path is to blend in, “Unambiguously Christian” sends a bold message that we will not stray from our commitment to the mission of Christ. I’m reminded of the question from Jesus to his disciples at Caesarea Philippi; “But what about you, who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15 NIV) It was at this time the foundation of Christianity was clearly laid as Simon Peter said, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God” (Matt 16:16 NIV). Unambiguously Christian sends that same bold, life changing message to the world.

I believe education should not be subjective, opinionated or agenda-driven. If we are unambiguous in our approach to educating our students, they can be confident that what is taught today will be taught tomorrow. The worth of a Baylor degree will continue to be strong among our peers.

In my 19 years at Baylor I’ve coached nearly 100 young women while they were working to receive their degrees. As I’ve watched them balance athletics and academics with a very demanding schedule and very demanding professors and coaches, I have found there is a common thread that runs through Baylor University—one of genuineness—through caring, encouraging, accomplished faculty who exemplify the body of Christ daily. I have also seen this consistently among the employees of Baylor University working daily for his glory.

As you’ve heard many times through the Illuminate strategic plan, we must be a light unto the world. We are called to do this, we are “set apart” because of this and expected to be “The Salt of the world.” We have an opportunity to shine our brightest because of our ever-changing and fallen world. While God doesn’t need for anything, our world needs Baylor University to illuminate God by having an unambiguous, unshakable and everlasting foundation that only resides in Christ. 

The secular world view has long been embraced in higher education and since it is somewhat indoctrinated into society, truth will be attacked. Jesus is truth and he tells us in John 8:32 “the truth will set us free.” I believe if we continue to practice these truths, God will guide and direct us and give us a powerful platform. On the other hand, if we waver, we will be like the salt that loses its flavor. 

My challenges have been blessings disguised as challenges, but used to promote or glorify God through Baylor Softball. With every challenge we must “Consider it pure joy, my brother and sisters, whenever you go through trials of many kinds, because the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1: 2-4 NIV)
