Carter Named Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences Dean

Jason R. Carter, Ph.D., vice president for research, economic development and graduate education at Montana State University, was named Baylor’s Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences Dean, effective Aug. 8. 

Provost Nancy Brickhouse, B.A. ’82, Ph.D., said Carter’s commitment to Baylor’s mission and his strong track record made him an ideal choice for the position.

“Dr. Carter will provide visionary leadership for the newest college at Baylor, strengthening the University’s position in health and wellness-related education, research and community engagement by increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary research, creative endeavors, clinical experiences and innovation,” Brickhouse said. “He is a proven leader and has excelled in building research programs by providing strong guidance to faculty, being knowledgeable about federal funding opportunities and partnering with other institutions to take on big research challenges.”

Carter earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Michigan Technological University, both in biological sciences, garnering summa cum laude honors as an undergraduate. He rose from assistant professor to associate professor and professor of kinesiology and integrative physiology at Michigan Tech, also serving 12 years as department chair. Carter was associate dean of Michigan Tech’s College of Arts and Sciences for three years, and he was associate vice president for research development prior to leaving his alma mater for Montana State in 2019.

In addition, Carter was a physiology and biomedical engineering adjunct associate professor with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from 2012 to 2015, and a visiting scholar in the University of Chicago Department of Medicine from 2014 to 2016.
