Career Experience

Mark M. Shelton

Mark M. Shelton retired after 33 years from the Cook Children’s Physician Network in 2021. His career included 20 years as medical director of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. During his career, Shelton was involved in the clinical practice of medicine, clinical research, administration of the department and governance of the physician network. He graduated from the Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1983, and he is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Board Experience

Shelton is a board member of the Tarrant County [Texas] Medical Society, the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Lena Pope Home, for which he served as president in 2004-05. He previously served as vice president of the Cook Children’s Physician Network Board for six years. Shelton was a member of the Texas Legislature from 2009 to 2012, during which time he served on the education and appropriations committees. He sought to preserve Baylor’s standing in the Big 12 Conference and supported the Tuition Equalization Grant Program.

Awards and Honors

Shelton has received the Cook Children’s Physician Network Service Award and the Texas Medical Association’s Champion of Medicine Award. As an undergraduate, he was awarded the Golden Wave Award for Outstanding Bandsman as a member of BUGWB.

Baylor Philanthropy

Shelton and his wife Mary Ann, B.S. ’79, were involved in giving and raising money for the Dr. F. Ray Wilson Endowed Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to students in Baylor’s Honors College.

Church/Christian Mission Affiliations

Shelton and his wife are active in Fort Worth’s Travis Avenue Baptist Church, where he is a Sunday school teacher and an orchestra member. He is a board member of the Mercy Clinic, an outreach mission of the church that provides medical care and dentistry to uninsured adults.
