Faculty Recognized for Trailblazing Scholarship

Baylor faculty members Leslie Palich, Ph.D., and Candi Cann, Ph.D., were both named Fulbright U.S. Scholars. 

Palich, the W.A. “Agnes” Mays Professor of Entrepreneurship in Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business, received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Ireland. In the fall 2022 semester, he will embark in research with faculty at Dublin City University as part of a project to study ethical attitudes and behaviors of entrepreneurs and small business owners.

“The primary project that I have planned will be an exploration of the ethical attitudes of small business owners in Ireland and the implications of various ethical values on venture conduct and performance outcomes,” Palich said.

Cann, associate professor of religion in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC), received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to South Korea. She will work with the faculty in the theology department at Han Nam University in Daejon, one of the few Christian universities in South Korea. Cann will study how Korean hospital funeral homes have impacted attitudes in Korea toward health and wellness management when hospitals are responsible for both the care of the living and the dead.

“Because of Korea’s socialized medical system, the funeral home is where most hospitals make their money, which brings up some interesting ethical questions,” Cann said. “Daejon is often considered to be the ‘Silicon Valley’ of South Korea. There are interesting things happening there in terms of technology, and I’m interested in examining what advances they are making in the area of death and technology, such as with virtual reality. It is the perfect place for me to be.”

Palich’s and Cann’s Fulbright Scholar Awards and research demonstrate how Baylor professors are trailblazers in their field, building international connections as an R1 institution and developing programs that impact and enhance the overall success of their students.

Palich, who has been a part of Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business since 1991, is eager for the University to receive international recognition.
