Baylor Law Moot Court Team Wins First Place

Baylor Law students took first place at the 2022 Hunton Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Invitational Championship hosted by the University of Houston Law Center in January. The nation’s top 16 moot court programs — based on their success during the 2020-21 competition season — were invited to compete. Baylor is the second Texas school to win the competition.

“This team’s success comes down to the talent of the members, their willingness to work and Professor Larry Bates’ guidance,” Erb said. “The team practiced for months, and all of that preparation paid off.”

This year’s championship was held virtually and featured a proposed violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) as its competition problem. The team was coached by law professor Larry T. Bates, J.D., and Associate Dean Patricia A. Wilson, J.D., and won the necessary seven rounds to claim the championship.

“This team never stopped working, from our first practice until the final round started,” Bates said. “They were continually reevaluating their arguments and their answers to the questions they were getting from the judges. Their commitment to being the best in the competition energized them throughout the process, and it was exciting to be a part of that process as it was happening. They deserved to win.”

Ammons, Erb and Tagliabue will equally share a $7,000 scholarship; Ammons will receive an additional $2,500 scholarship for being named Best Speaker. Tagliabue earned a perfect score in the semifinals, and Erb’s brief scored fourth overall.

“Participating in the Hunton Andrews Kurth Moot Court Competition was a great experience,” Ammons said. “I was honored to represent Baylor Law in the competition along with my outstanding teammates.”
