Moments of Remembrance

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Baylor community participated in several moments to remember the countless lives lost in the tragedy, to honor and thank first responders and to offer a prayer for our nation.

The Baylor Family gathered with University and community leaders for a time of reflection and prayer outside Pat Neff Hall. Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., honored the brave men and women first responders who serve the Baylor campus and the Waco community with a proclamation, and she remembered those who responded to the tragic events of Sept. 11. A prayer for the continued healing and hope for our nation was offered by Pentagon-attack survivor and Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) U.S. Army.

Immediately following the ceremony, University’s Carillonneur Lynnette Geary performed a concert of contemplative music on the McLane Carillon.

Students, faculty and staff also participated in the Stair-Climber Challenge in the McLane Student Life Center to commemorate the 110 floors scaled by those who officed in the World Trade Center towers and the first responders who rushed to their aid.

During Baylor Football’s home opener against Texas Southern at McLane Stadium, attendees were part of additional recognition events, including the presentation of a field-sized American flag by the Baylor VETS program, a moment of silence and presentation of the nearly 3,000 names of those lost. The tower of Baylor’s Pat Neff Hall was lit red, white and blue in remembrance of 9/11.
