Professor named Fulbright Scholar

October 4, 2013

Dr. Bryan W. Brooks, professor of environmental science and biomedical studies in Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences and director of the environmental science graduate program and the environmental health science program, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research during the 2013-14 academic year at the University of Lethbridge in Canada.

"It's an honor to receive the Fulbright, which will facilitate novel collaborations with world-class water scientists at the University of Lethbridge and other colleagues in Alberta," Brooks said.

The position gives Brooks the opportunity to guest lecture and conduct research focusing on water resources in Alberta, Canada, in an effort to better understand water quality stressors across various types of areas and environments.

"Human interactions with freshwater remain among the greatest challenges to environmental sustainability. As the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Water and the Environment, my goal is to develop a more robust understanding of water quality in urbanizing watersheds of semi-arid regions in Alberta," Brooks said. "Multidisciplinary studies in southern Alberta will leverage our ongoing work in semi-arid regions of Texas and other parts of the U.S. to advance sustainable water resource management efforts."

Brooks, the seventh Baylor professor since 2000 to be recognized with a Fulbright award, is an international expert on contaminants and water quality issues in urban regions. His research team focuses efforts on water quality and water reuse, comparative toxicology and pharmacology, sustainable molecular design/green chemistry, developing approaches to define contaminant risks and the ecology and toxicology of harmful algae blooms. Brooks has authored more than 100 book chapters and articles in scholarly journals.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. Since 2001, 36 Baylor students and/or graduates have been honored with the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship.
