Louise Durham Denham, BA '36, is the granddaughter of John Thomas Harrington of the Harrington House on the Baylor campus. She is the reason that I went to Baylor. She is now 93 years old and wanted to make sure that the Baylor family doesn't forget who John Thomas Harrington was to this world. She has written a book about him and is looking to get it published. She wants to leave a written legacy and has written it all down. I am proud to be her granddaughter and a Baylor Bear." Dick Clayton, BA '55, had six stories and a poem published in the November 2009 issue of Lighthouse Digest. He has had three dozen histories of lighthouse keepers published there in the past decade. Clayton says his "first 15 minutes of fame" came as the voice of Mickey Mud Turtle on Channel 11 in Fort Worth's "Mickey and Amanda" puppet show, which aired five days a week from 1957 to 1963. George Chandler, BA '60, JD '62, founder and chairman of Chandler, Mathis & Zivley in Lufkin, Texas, was named the 2009 Baylor Lawyer of the Year by Baylor Law School.

"George has, in his life and in his career, set a mark that provides each of us with aspirational goals of the loftiest sort," said Baylor Law Dean Brad Toben, JD '77. "He has attained the pinnacle of achievement as a trial lawyer. He has been honored time and time again for his work in the courtroom. He has a passion for vindicating the rights of those who have lost loved ones, suffered grievous injury or otherwise been tread upon wrongfully. For George, his trial work is about reaching out to serve others in the courtroom and in the profession, a profession in which he has been a consistent, strong voice of leadership."

The title of Fields' paper: "Hymns and Gospel Songs in the Core Repertory of Southern Baptist Congregations as Reflected in Five Hymnals Published from 1940 to 2008." Katherine Reid, BA '63, is president-elect of her local retired teacher group and chairman of the Texas State Research Committee for Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary teacher organization. David C. Marx, BA '64, has written a novel, James Oliver Young: Interim Pastor, officially released on Feb. 18. Set at Geneva Presbyterian Church on the north side of San Antonio, the novel shows Young's deep care for people in ministry at the church, in the hospital and in homes, and that unplanned ministry occurs in unexpected places such as rest stops along highways. Jim and his wife, Diane, receive loving care even while caring for others.

Nathalie Sorrell, BA '70, is co-founder of Truth Be Told, a Texas nonprofit serving women in prison. TBT has provided practical tools for women behind and beyond bars since 2003 and is now expanding to the women's unit in Gatesville. As director of the "Behind Bars" program, Sorrell has taught incarcerated women how to tell the story of what got them into prison. The program focuses on communication, creativity and community building as transformational tools to help these women rebuild their lives and the lives of their families. W. Mike Baggett, JD '73, Winstead PC Chairman Emeritus and Dallas Shareholder, was named Dallas Regional Chamber Chairman of the Board-elect at the organization's annual meeting, held Jan. 14. Baggett has served on the Chamber's board and as a member of the executive committee for several years. A well-known and highly respected legal community, civic and business leader, Baggett served as the chairman and CEO of Winstead from 1992 through 2006. He was the seventh lawyer to join Winstead and under his leadership, Winstead has grown into a large Texas law firm.

Baggett received his BBA from Texas A&M (Distinguished Alumni, 1998). He clerked for Justice Price Daniel Sr. of the Texas Supreme Court and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for Vietnam service as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Kevin Hall, BA '77, Oklahoma Baptist University Hollums Chair of Bible and Professor of Religion, was elected by his peers to serve as chair of OBU's Faculty Council during the 2009-10 academic year. Along with teaching all levels of religion courses, Hall is a contributing writer to Biblical Illustrator magazine. He has written for the Southwestern Journal of Theology and is a contributor to the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible. In 1999, he received OBU's Promising Teacher Award. He and his wife, Diana L. Dave Edwards has created Jamstudio.com, the first site of its kind to help users create music, even those who haven't had lessons on an instrument. With over 200,000 users, many are creating and sharing their music all over the world. Edwards' newest venture is a software development kit that allows Windows programmers to develop games for the iPhone. Jerry Elliott, BBA '81, JD '83, former chief financial officer of Virgin Media, has been named chief financial officer/chief administrative officer for The Weather Channel Companies. In this newly created role, Elliott will have overall responsibility for the company's finance, legal, administrative and human resources functions. Lisa Bergen Wilson, BS '81, was selected as Assistant Head of School for Advancement at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tenn., after serving the higher education community for the past nine years. She is thrilled to lead a team of development and advancement professionals in a $40 million capital campaign. Groundbreaking for two new facilities was set to occur in March 2010 for visual arts and athletics/wellness. Ms. S. Shawn Stephens, BA '82, was one of six individuals recently appointed to the Texas Commission on the Arts by Governor Rick Perry. The commission encourages appreciation for fine arts in Texas and acts in an advisory capacity regarding the construction and remodeling of state buildings and works of art. The commission also awards significant arts and cultural grants throughout Texas. Her term will expire in August of 2015. She is partner at Baker Hostetler and leads the Houston office's appellate practice.

Vic Vines, BBA '83, of Dallas, has recently been named territory sales manager (United States) for RetailTribe, a South Africa-based company that has developed a web-based marketing tool for PGA head professionals (club professionals). Rachel Cywinski, BBA '85, was awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship at the Texas Conference for Women hosted by Governor Rick Perry and First Lady Anita Perry in San Antonio in November. Cywinski is enrolled in the doctoral program in mathematics education at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She teaches as an adjunct instructor at Alamo Colleges and also tutors blind students.

Mark Freeze, BBA '85, has been named Of Counsel, effective Jan. 1, at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, an international law firm. His practice is based in the firm's Phoenix office and encompasses environmental, toxic tort and complex civil litigation, environmental enforcement defense, and environmental counseling. Freeze is a past recipient of the prestigious Burton Award for legal writing, given annually by the Burton Foundation in partnership with the Library of Congress to commend excellence and clarity in legal writing.

Clark Hood, BBA '85, of Prosper, Texas, has recently been promoted to Director of Sales, North America for Cardiac Science Corporation. Cardiac Science is a worldwide leader and manufacturer of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), which are used to treat out-of-hospital victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Ken Paxton, BA '85, MBA '86, was re-elected to the Texas House of Representatives in Nov. 2008 and just completed his fourth legislative session. He currently serves on the Ways and Means Committee and the House Land and Resource Management Committee. Additionally, he owns and operates a private business consulting practice, specializing in estate planning, probate, real estate and general business matters. Matthew Brent Turk, BBA '85, of Beaumont, Texas, was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the JAG corps of the National Guard on Dec. 17. On Nov. 9, his son, Matthew Robert, was born.

Greg A. Wilson, BBA '85, recently joined the Dallas-based Mortgage Search & Acquisition (MSA) firm as a vice president in the Dallas office. Prior to joining MSA, Wilson was a division manager for Dallas-based Genesys Group, a consulting and outsourcing firm. During his 25-year career, Wilson has held leadership roles and recruited for clients in the financial services, technology, energy and nonprofit organization industries. David Slover, BBA '86, MBA '89, was named president of Buckner Foundation in Dallas on Jan. 22. In his new role, he leads the fundraising and advancement efforts of Buckner International's global ministry to orphans, vulnerable children and families and works to secure funds for the nearly $100 million annual operating budget. Slover formerly served as executive vice president of Buckner Foundation. He has served on the Baylor Bear Foundation Board of Directors. Michele Nelson Reising, BSHE '87, of Coppell, Texas, and her husband Richard have owned Artistry Marketing, a church marketing consulting company, for over 10 years. Salem Radio Network debuted the talk radio show for national syndication on Christian-formatted stations on Feb. 1. Kathleen Sullivan Stephens, BA '92, MA '94, is pleased to announce the publication of Our White Boy, a work she co-authored with Jerry Craft, the first white man to play baseball in the West Texas Colored League during the summers of 1959 and 1960. Stephen M. Ulbricht, MHA '92, is administrative director for the Children's Heart Program at Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. He recently became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the nation's leading professional society for healthcare leaders. Ulbricht, RN, BSN, MBA, FACHE, is a graduate of the U.S. Army-Baylor Program in Healthcare Administration, and spent 23-plus years on active duty in the United States Navy before retiring at the rank of Commander in 2002. Carlos Colón-Quintana, MM '93, has received an ASCAPLUS Award, designated for non-commercial composers, from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. "The award is not for one composition, but a recognition for the amount of performances my music is generating," explains Colón-Quintana. "However, the main piece that has been generating some performances and attention is my musical requiem, 'Las Lamentaciones de Rufina Amaya,' written for the victims of a massacre in El Salvador." On Nov. 6, Colón-Quintana conducted the Salvadoran premiere of the piece in San Salvador at Catholic University, where the chorus of the National Opera performed his work. Jayne A. Pemberton, BA '93, MA '96, a lawyer in the risk management practice at Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, P.C. based in Richmond, Va., has been made president of their board of directors and risk management chair. Pemberton, a long-time volunteer leader and mentor, was awarded the 2007 Big Sister of the Year for her volunteer service with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Central Virginia. Pemberton concentrates her law practice on the defense of companies and individuals in insurance litigation and on insurance coverage issues.

Jennifer McBrayer, BFA '94, is a member of the 2009 national champion 4.0 USTA tennis team representing Southern California. Her team participated in the USTA League National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., in October. McBrayer and her doubles partner helped the team clinch the title in a third set tie-breaker.

Brent Harman, MBA '98, owns and operates Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse in Dallas. The legendary barbecue joint celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Bryan family of restaurants on Feb. 13. Sonny Bryan's has also announced plans to franchise throughout the United States. Harman hiked Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2009.

Jeremy E. Warren, BA '98, was appointed Judge of County Court at Law #3 and Probate Court of Brazoria County, Texas, in October 2008. After graduating from South Texas College of Law in 2002, Warren worked at the Brazoria County District Attorney's Office.

Rev. Jeff Huckeby, MDiv '03, was presented the Church History Writing Award at the annual BGCT meeting in Houston in November. The Texas Baptist Historical Society is publishing his book, 125 Years Down by the Creek, a history of Pecan Grove Baptist Church of Gatesville, Texas. He is pastor of Eagle Springs Baptist Church in McGregor, Texas, and also works part-time for Baylor's Mayborn Museum.

Adriana Garcia Miller, BA '03, MS '06, was married in 2008. She and her husband bought their first home in May 2009 on 4.5 acres in Conroe, Texas. "I miss seeing good ol' Baylor!" she says.

Eric Silverman, MA '03, professor of philosophy and religious studies at Christopher Newport University, has published his first book, The Prudence of Love: How Possessing the Virtue of Love Benefits the Lover. This book investigates the connection between love and happiness. Using a variety of historical and contemporary sources in philosophy, psychology and religion, it demonstrates that love provides benefits beyond the relational ones most people recognize. Lindsey Coker, BBA '09, says, "It was so awesome to get to chat with our interim president and his wife, David and Diana Garland, and get excited for the Baylor football game at Wake Forest together!!! I moved away for grad school the week after I graduated, and it was SO wonderful to be able to join such a wonderful crowd at the tailgate and chat with Baylor friends--new and old. I love that Baylor is such a tight-knit family, no matter where you go!"

On Dec. 12, 2,178.3 miles and 166 days later, he reached the end of the Appalachian Trail on Springer Mountain in Georgia. Valerie Phillips, BS '09, had an opportunity to go to the White House for a special reception held in the Roosevelt Room in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Phillips traveled with her mom Vicki to honor a White House staff member who served six U.S. presidents.
