November 30, 2009

Burna Frank "Burnie" Battles, MA '65, MS '66, assistant professor of health, human performance and recreation, died June 20 in an automobile accident. He was 68. Battles was a beloved member of the School of Education for 42 years and taught a number of courses throughout his career.
He served on the advisory board and was a teaching associate of the Outdoor Adventure Living and Learning Center at Baylor, an LLC in North Village created in 2006. He also participated with Baylor's University for Young People program.
Dr. Dale Connally, associate professor of HHPR and the director of the recreation and leisure services division, was Battles' student at Baylor during Connally's freshman year in the fall of 1979. "For the last 30 years he's been my teacher, mentor, friend and colleague," Connally said. "Burnie was quintessential Baylor--he loved God, his family, students and colleagues. He modeled sacrificial love for us, all the while proudly clad in Green and Gold."
