Big 12 Champs--again

May 28, 2009

For the fifth straight year, both the Baylor men's and women's tennis teams claimed the Big 12 Conference regular season titles. Both squads also went on to win the conference tournament and enter the NCAA tournament as top seeds.

Baylor men's tennis now owns 16 Big 12 titles (nine regular season, seven tournament)--more than any other school in any other sport in Big 12 history. The Baylor women have 10 conference titles (six regular season, four tournament), making them one of just 10 Big 12 programs to have accomplished that feat.

Head coach Matt Knoll's men won their eighth straight regular season conference championship (ninth overall), followed by their seventh Big 12 Tournament title in the last eight years. The Bears entered the NCAA tournament with a 23-5 record on the season and were named the tourney's No. 6 overall seed, but were surprisingly sent on the road to Tulsa for their first and second round matches. Undaunted, Baylor kept on winning, advancing to the sweet 16 for the eighth straight season.

The Baylor women, meanwhile, won their fifth straight Big 12 regular season title (and the sixth in head coach Joey Scrivano's seven years at Baylor) and their fourth straight conference tournament. As the No. 4 overall seed in the women's NCAA tournament, the Lady Bears were picked to host the first two rounds at the Baylor Tennis Center. They won both matches there to advance to the Round of 16 for the fifth consecutive year.

Since the 2003-04 school year, only Texas has more total Big 12 titles than Baylor's 25. The Bears and Longhorns are tied for the conference lead this year, with each school having claimed five rings.
