Celebrating Silver

Whether it's a professional necessity or a personal passion, most would agree lifelong learning is a valuable pursuit. 
This year, Baylor's Continuing Education program celebrates its 25th year of bringing those opportunities to Central Texans.
"A university has a responsibility to its constituents beyond their degree-seeking years on campus. We need to provide the opportunity for people to find out about changing information, new perspectives," said Annette Lindsey, director of Continuing Education for the past 14 years. 
To mark its silver anniversary, CE is featuring a lecture series -- a retrospective on the current era -- on the second Tuesday night of each month through May. Some of the upcoming topics include "From the Ayatollah to bin Laden: How Did We Get There?" by Linda Adams, associate professor of political science; "Promises of Greater Longevity: Developments in Medicine" by William Hillis, professor of biology; and "Explosive Social Issues of the Past 25 Years" by Robert Baird, Master Teacher and chair of the philosophy department. The lectures will be at 7 p.m. in the Paul and Katy Piper Great Hall, George W. Truett Theological Seminary. 
At its start in 1980, CE offered nine courses. Today, it offers more than 50 on-campus and online classes. Ninety percent of CE participants live in McLennan County, Lindsey said. 
Continuing Education also hosts the Baylor Institute for Learning in Retirement and Breakfast at Baylor, sponsored by the Baylor Alumni Association.
