  • Once again, Baylor Law School students achieved the highest passing percentage of the nine law schools in the state on the July 2002 Texas Bar Exam. Ninety-four of the 100 Baylor students who took the exam passed and two were among the exam's top three scorers.
  • Four were named Distinguished Alumni by the Baylor Alumni Association in late January. They are Dr. Gary R. Cook, Dr. Barbara Montgomery Dossey, Dr. Kenneth Q. Carlile and the Rev. Bill Glass. They were honored at a banquet held Jan. 31.
  • Dr. R. Alden Smith, associate professor and chair of classics and director of the University Scholars Program, was honored by the American Philological Association with the Award for Excellence in Teaching of Classics at the group's annual meeting.
  • A senior University Scholar from Dallas, John Kent, has been selected as Baylor's first Presidential Fellow. As such, he will develop and implement a strategic plan for communicating the goals and progress of Baylor 2012 to the student body and will provide a student perspective on decision-making in the President's Office.
  • Baylor University Press has a new director. Dr. Carey Newman has been appointed to oversee the press, which has published academic books since 1897. Dr. Newman hopes to publish up to 30 books per year and acquire up to 35 books per year by 2012. He is the author or editor of three books and numerous academic and professional articles.
