Academic Merit Aid Increased For Fall

Baylor has announced two new academic merit scholarships and increased the amounts of several existing scholarships for 2004 freshmen and transfer students.
A Founders' award of $6,000 and a Deans' award of $14,000, all administered over eight undergraduate semesters, have been added. Also, the Achievement scholarships have been restructured to recognize students with superior SAT/ACT scores and range in value from $4,000 to $12,000. They will be awarded in addition to the President's, Provost's and Deans' awards.
The value of the President's and the Provost's scholarships each increased by $4,000 to $32,000 and $24,000, respectively. Scholarships for transfer students increased by $1,500 per academic year for students with a 3.5 grade point average or higher and by $1,000 for those with a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA. The Phi Theta Kappa award for transfer students (for members in good standing) will double to $1,000 per academic year.
"We continue to be sensitive to the needs of our prospective students and their families in these days of increased costs nationally for higher education," said David Brooks, vice president for finance and administration. He noted that some students who qualify for merit scholarships also qualify for need-based aid, which can help "fill the gap."
