Web Extra: A Special Class of Professor

September 10, 2002

In 1997, Baylor created two new professorial designations and began a concerted search for nationally recognized academicians to become Distinguished and University Professors. National or international leaders in their academic disciplines, these professors help develop or enhance graduate programs, teach undergraduates, guide younger faculty and serve as mentors to the whole. Baylor had six such professors in the 2001-02 and brought in four more this fall. In the next five years, it will add up to a dozen more, with the goal of having one Distinguished Professor in every PhD department, as well as in departments developing graduate programs.

New Distinguished Professors this fall are:
? Johnny Henderson, mathematics
? Walter Bradley, engineering
? Stanley Grenz, theology
? John Hare, classical thought (coming fall 2003)

Previously hired Distinguished Professors:
? Carl G. Vaught, philosophy
? David L. Jeffrey, literature and humanities
? Robert C. Roberts, ethics

University Professors:
? Ralph C. Wood, theology and literature
? Marc H. Ellis, American and Jewish studies
? C. Stephen Evans, philosophy and humanities
