Web Extra: California Couple Track Potential Bears

November 20, 2002

"In what city is Baylor University located?" might seem an obvious question for dedicated Bears, but Bear Hunters Hal and Marcia Dixon use such trivia to recruit students. As high school teachers in Orange County, Calif., the Dixons have been boosting Baylor for years.
"Hal teaches economics and I teach physics, so we're always encouraging the kids to consider Baylor," Marcia says. "We have fun adding Baylor trivia as extra-credit questions on exams."
College fairs are a specialty of the Dixons, who attend several local fairs as well as the national college fair in Anaheim, Calif.
"College fairs are an important recruiting event because you get to interact with the parents, an experience you don't get in the classroom," Marcia says. "Sometimes the student doesn't understand. You really make an impact when you speak with parents."
Although Hal and Marcia aren't alumni, they began recruiting students when their oldest son, Brian, enrolled at Baylor. Brian, BA '90, received his degree in history and religion in 1990 and is a missionary in central Asia. Younger son, Scott, BA '98, has a degree in journalism and his wife, Latisha, BBA '02, has a degree in management information systems.
Seven students from Scott's high school graduating class enrolled at Baylor, in large part due to the Dixons' enthusiasm for the University. Marcia says they loved watching a great group of students excel at Baylor.
"It comes down to we all just really love Baylor," she says.
