Sic 'em, Bookworms?

November 20, 2002

Baylor's mascot might not have been a bear at all. Other vote-getters back in 1914, when the student body elected to have a live mascot, included the buffalo, eagle, antelope and bookworm -- yes, bookworm. But when the vote was taken that December, the bear won by little more than half of the 406 votes cast.
Baylor received its first live mascot in fall 1917 from the 107th Engineer Battalion at Fort MacArthur, which donated its bear, named Ted, to the University. Since then, Baylor has housed more than 50 North American Black Bears.
