Discovery Center, Museum Complex Under Construction

Construction is under way on Baylor's Harry and Anna Jeanes Discovery Center, the centerpiece of The Sue and Frank Mayborn Natural Science and Cultural History Museum Complex. 
The $23 million building, located near Interstate 35 on University Parks Drive, will include a wing that will house Baylor's Center for Museum Studies.
"We are deeply grateful to the many families, corporations and foundations who are helping make this project possible through their generosity," said Calvin Smith, director of the Mayborn Museum Complex and chair of the Department of Museum Studies.
Officials expect more than 200,000 visitors each year at the new center, which will provide science and cultural history experiences for children and families. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in January 2001, with completion expected in 2004.
The Waco mammoth archaeological site, which will be under the auspices of the Mayborn Museum Complex, is located along the Bosque River. It includes the remains of 23 Columbian mammoths and one camel. It is believed to be the world's largest concentration of extinct proboscideans that perished in a single event, Smith said.
Major donors for the Discovery Campaign include the Frank W. and Anyse Sue Mayborn Foundation of Temple, Harry and Anna Jeanes of Waco, the Southwestern Bell Foundation, Thomas and Emilyne Anding of Dallas and AT&T Foundation/Corp.
