Theodore “Ted” Nichols

Theodore “Ted” Nichols, B.M. ’51, passed away Jan. 9 in Auburn, WA, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born Oct. 2, 1928, in Missoula, MT, Nichols discovered a love for music at an early age. After graduating from John R. Rogers High School in Spokane, WA, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor and a master’s degree in composition from Texas A&I University — now known as Texas A&M University — Kingsville. He served his country in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force before beginning a career in music education, conducting and composition.

Nichols is best remembered for his work as music director for Hanna-Barbera Productions from 1963 to 1972, where he helped create the musical soundscape of beloved animated classics including “Jonny Quest,” “The Flintstones,” “Scooby-Doo,” “Where Are You!,” “Space Ghost,” and “Josie and the Pussycats.” His memorable scores became an enduring part of television history and influenced generations of composers.

Following his career in animation, Nichols devoted himself to Christian ministry, sacred music and education. He served as minister of music, international music director for Campus Crusade for Christ, composer of numerous sacred works and operas and founder of programs that trained future church musicians.

Nichols’ legacy lived on through his music, faith, students and family. He will be remembered for his remarkable creativity, dedication to service and lasting contributions to both animation and sacred music.
