Summer Camping: The Lasting Impact of Baylor’s Summer Programs
Each summer, Baylor’s campus transforms into a dynamic environment where learning is supported by doing, and experiences shape both young participants and the Baylor students who lead them. Baylor’s wide range of summer camps – more than 30 University camps and 32 sports camps throughout the summer – plays a significant role in advancing the University’s mission, serving as a bridge between the campus and the broader Waco community while fostering leadership, connection and growth in participating students.
For campers, these programs often represent formative milestones. Initiatives like Upward Bound (UBU) and the Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) provide high school students with early exposure to college life, equipping them with the tools needed to navigate academic pathways and define personal goals. Through mentorship, team-building and leadership training, participants develop confidence and a clearer sense of direction through intentional programming and activities. Walking across campus, engaging with current students and participating in guided programming transforms college from a distant concept into an achievable, tangible reality.
For younger participants, programs such as Baylor REC Camp and University for Young People (UYP) lay the groundwork for lifelong learning and character development. REC Camp blends recreation and value formation through structured outdoor activities and daily devotionals. Meanwhile, UYP introduces elementary students to creative problem-solving and critical thinking at an early age, encouraging curiosity and collaboration. These early experiences are essential, as they help young students build foundational skills and positive associations with learning in a supportive environment.
The impact these camps have on Baylor students who serve as program staff is equally significant. Hundreds of student staff are responsible for intentionally guiding group dynamics, facilitating daily activities and supporting campers from all walks of life. In doing so, they sharpen critical life skills, such as communication, adaptability, problem-solving and mentorship.
Additionally, working at these camps allows Baylor students to engage with the University’s mission on a deeper level. Many programs emphasize service, leadership and faith-based principles, giving student employees the opportunity to put these ideals into practice. Whether student leaders are teaching a camper about music performance with the Middle School Band and Orchestra Camp or demonstrating proper layup techniques at Basketball Camp, student staff serve as invaluable role models whose influence extends far beyond the duration of the program.
As campers grow throughout the summer, student leaders report increased confidence and a stronger sense of purpose. The responsibility of guiding others encourages reflection on their own goals, purpose, strengths and leadership styles. For many, working a summer camp becomes a defining experience in their Baylor journey—one that shapes their academic pursuits, career interests, and commitment to service.
