Steppin Out turns 40

Over the past 40 years, Steppin’ Out has become a tradition beloved by Baylor and the surrounding community. It’s one of the largest community service projects on American college campuses and is nationally recognized for its commitment to service. Steppin’ Out is a great opportunity for all Baylor students to practice leadership through hands-on service as thousands of Baylor students “step out” together across Waco to serve the community twice a year.

“Service is at the heart of Baylor and at the heart of the Gospel that Jesus taught — feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned [Matthew 25],” said Rebecca Kennedy, M.B.A. ’14, assistant dean of spiritual life and missions associate chaplain. “It is our responsibility to love God and love neighbor.”

Students serve local homes, churches, schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Waco community. Through projects ranging from gardening at local schools to beautifying public spaces, Steppin’ Out serves as a bridge between Baylor students and their neighbors. From kayaking on the Brazos River to pick up trash to painting houses or rebuilding garden beds at elementary schools, this day often provides unexpected joys and embodies the University’s dedication to fostering a spirit of service and connection.
