Getting Involved at Baylor Starts Here

With so many ways to get involved on campus, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to begin. Thankfully, the Student Involvement Center offers not only a great place to start, but also a resource for organizations as well. 

“We’re the bridge between student organizations and students as a whole,” Damo Kouakou, student involvement specialist, said. 

So, what can you expect from the Student Involvement Center? 

One-on-One Meetings

With more than 400 student organizations and countless other ways to get involved, Student Involvement Specialists are Baylor students trained to help you find the best involvement options for you. 

“When you first come to Baylor, there are so many events, organizations and things on campus, so it’s hard to figure out what exactly you might want to do,” Kondwani Masamba, student involvement specialist, said. “Students can email and set up a meeting with us to tell us about their interests, things that they want to learn, things that are related to their major, maybe some orgs that they’ve already heard of but they’re not quite sure what they’re about or how to get in contact with them. We’ll sit with them, make them a list of all the different orgs that they want to join and how they can get connected.”

Help Starting Your Own Organization 

Each academic year, Baylor University and the Department of Student Activities recognize an average of more than 15 new student organizations.

“If people want to start their own organizations, the first process is initially meeting with us,” Masamba said. “We’ll discuss what the mission and longevity of the organization is going to be, so they can fill out their full application to get chartered.”

After this, students can go on with the steps that follow in starting a student org. 

Approving Events

Every event, including weekly meetings, new member activities and off-campus or out-of-town events, must be submitted for approval to the Department of Student Activities through the online Event Registration form within the Connect system at least one week in advance.

“We spend a lot of time in Connect approving events,” Kouakou said. “Students come to the office to ask us about what step of the process it’s at and we let them know if there are changes/details they need in order to get it approved.”

Rental Forms 

The Center wants to make sure that students have what they need to make their events successful, and this includes having items available to check out. 

“Let’s say an org is having an event at Fountain Mall; there's no electricity, but we’ve got a closet with items like power banks or speakers if the group needs a sound system,” Kouakou said. 

“We have games too,” Masamba said. “Anything you might need to host an event — we probably have it! Just come by the office and fill out a form.” 

So, for students unsure where to start, the Student Involvement Center is an excellent resource for everyone.
