Academic Support Opportunities for Baylor Students

Baylor University is dedicated to fostering an environment where students are equipped and empowered to pursue holistic success. The Paul L. Foster Success Center is home to many offices and programs that support academic achievement, personal development and vocational exploration for all students. 

“Students and their families make a significant investment to choose Baylor,” said Carroll Crowson, B.A. ’03, M.S.Ed. ’05, M.T.S. ’12, director of academic support programs in the Success Center. “Our services are included with tuition for all students, so to make the most out of their experience, we encourage students to utilize all of the resources that we offer.” 

Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction

The Tutoring Center offers a variety of tutoring options to help Baylor students better understand and apply the content in their coursework. In addition to individual or group study sessions with qualified tutors, the Tutoring Center provides online study guide resources to help students focus on key concepts and fill in gaps in their comprehension of a topic.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a collaborative learning program that focuses on deepening student understanding. SI sessions are peer-facilitated study sessions outside of the traditional classroom setting designed to reinforce course material, promote active learning, and provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful discussions. 

Personalized Academic Assistance

The Success Center also offers personalized academic assistance to students through coaching, mentoring and the Study Skills Center, where graduate-level academic coaches help students with skills like time management, notetaking, reading comprehension and other techniques that enhance their learning in any course. The Study Skills Center also offers workshops on various study-related topics. 

Other programs available to all students include: 

• Office of Access and Learning Accommodation (OALA): OALA ensures that all aspects of campus life are accessible to all students, regardless of their abilities. 
• Navigate: Navigate connects faculty to advisors to identify challenges students face and develop a pathway to success. 
• Major Exploration and Success Advising (MESA): MESA guides students on their journey to find a major that is best suited for them.

Additionally, the Success Center offers programs designed to support specific student populations:

• TRIO Student Support Services (SSS): SSS empowers students from underrepresented backgrounds to achieve academic success and personal growth.
• Pre-Law: The Pre-Law Program provides advising, programming and resources to students of all majors who are considering a career in law. 
• Veteran Educational and Transition Services (VETS): VETS is dedicated to supporting the successful transition of military-connected students into their next chapters in servant leadership. 
• First In Line: First In Line offers holistic support to first-generation college students. 
• Pathfinders: Pathfinders supports first-year students in their transition to college life through programming, mentoring and hands-on experiences. 
• McNair Scholars Program: The McNair Scholars Program prepares students from underrepresented backgrounds to navigate a successful path to a Ph.D. program. 
• Adelante: Adelante equips undergraduate Latinx students to identify support systems, improve academic performance, and graduate from college. 
• Transfer Student Success: The Office of Transfer Student Success provides coaching and support aimed at helping transfer students achieve success.
