Waco Surf Makes Waves for Bears
Baylor University is collaborating with Waco Surf, integrating its premier inland surfing facility into the student experience and expanding opportunities for engagement beyond campus. Located in Waco, Waco Surf is one of the largest inland surfing and water sports facilities in the country, offering a state-of-the-art surf lagoon powered by PerfectSwell technology. This cutting-edge wave system generates consistent, high-quality waves, making it an ideal training ground for both beginners and professional surfers alike.
Waco Surf was originally established as Barefoot Ski Ranch Cable Park, most known as BSR, in 2002 by brothers Ryan and Stuart Parsons. The facility began as a cable wakeboarding facility before evolving into a premier surfing destination. In 2018, the installation of their renowned wave pool transitioned the park into BSR Surf Ranch, attracting global attention when Kelly Slater surfed the first wave. That same year, the park hosted The Founder’s Cup, establishing itself in the surfing world. In 2021, new ownership rebranded the facility as Waco Surf, continuing its legacy of innovation while expanding its offerings.
Beyond surfing, Waco Surf features a wakeboarding cable park, the world’s longest lazy river and thrilling Wedge Slides. The facility has gained recognition within the surfing community, attracting professional surfers such as Gabriel Medina, Mason Ho and Carissa Moore. Events like Swatch Nines have further solidified Waco Surf’s reputation as a premier destination for water sports and outdoor adventure.
Through a new collaboration, Baylor students gain access to weekly beginner and intermediate surfing lessons during non-peak seasons, allowing them to develop new skills and experience the thrill of surfing in a controlled environment. Additionally, Waco Surf maintains a strong presence at key Baylor admissions events, including Invitation to Excellence and Baylor Premiere, where prospective students can explore Waco’s distinctive outdoor recreation scene. A Baylor-branded area at Waco Surf further strengthens the connection between the University and the surfing destination.
Looking ahead, Baylor continues to explore additional ways to integrate Waco Surf into student life. Future initiatives may include co-branded experiences, an annual Baylor surf challenge and academic collaborations such as a surfing course for Lifetime Fitness credit or an intramural surfing program offered through campus recreation. This collaboration reflects the University’s commitment to providing engaging, hands-on experiences that extend beyond the classroom and into the Waco community.
