Peggy J. Powell, B.A. ’59, of Dallas, died April 26. She was born July 19, 1937, in Big Spring, TX, to Dr. and Mrs. John E. Hogan. In 1958, she married Boone Powell Jr., B.B.A. ’59, the love of her life.

Powell earned a Bachelor of Arts from Baylor in 1959 and later a master’s in hospital administration from UC Berkeley. After a brief residency in Memphis, TN, she and Boone made their home in Abilene, TX, where they lived for 19 years. There, Powell shared her passion for teaching through church ministries and youth programs, including Vacation Bible School and Backyard Bible Clubs. In 1969, the Powells helped launch Abilene Young Life, a lasting ministry devoted to reaching teenagers with the Gospel.

In 1980, the couple moved to Dallas when Boone became president and CEO of Baylor University Medical Center. The following year, they founded The Nearly Weds, a ministry for engaged couples at Park Cities Baptist Church, which they led for 19 years. Powell also remained active in Young Life at the national level.

A devoted grandmother, Powell created “Cousins Camp,” a beloved annual tradition for her seven grandchildren, praying for each one on their designated day of the week. Her deep love for prayer led her to establish Praying Grandmothers, a ministry centered on praying scripture over grandchildren.

Powell was known for her boundless hospitality, heartfelt empathy and unique “writing ministry,” which offered ongoing support to widows, inmates and countless others. She extended love generously and made everyone feel like family.

Above all, Powell was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother and friend — and a tireless prayer warrior. Her legacy of love, faith and prayer continues to bless generations.
