A Novel Approach to Career Support

At Baylor, career development is a personalized journey that begins the moment students arrive on campus. The Career Center plays a vital role in helping students discover and fulfill their calling, boasting a 91% placement rate for graduates in either the workforce or graduate school. This innovative approach is built on the core belief that every student’s path is unique, and the support they receive should be, too.

The Career Center’s strategy is highly relational and data-driven. During orientation, students are encouraged to complete four key steps: join Handshake, build a resume, meet with a career coach and explore their interests through Stepping Blocks, a career discovery tool. These action items are not simply checkboxes for completion; they are the first steps in a personalized journey toward success. There are no additional costs for Baylor’s Career Center services, so every student is encouraged to take full advantage of the Career Center’s resources and expertise.

From day one, students are matched with a dedicated career coach based on their academic path.

“We proactively reach out at the beginning of each semester to see who needs help,” said Michael Estepp, assistant vice provost for the Career Center. “After we know who needs help, we assign them a career coach who can help them achieve their specific goals.”

This intentional pairing allows for tailored guidance that evolves with each student’s goals, ensuring that instruction is both relevant and strategic.

Whether a student is exploring internships, job options or preparing for graduate school, career coaches provide mentorship, accountability and encouragement.

“We’re not just advisors, we’re coaches, strategists and cheerleaders,” Estepp said. “We meet students where they are and help them grow from there.”

An impressive 99% knowledge rate — the percentage of graduating students for whom the Career Center has credible and verifiable information about post-graduation career plans — is an example of the strong relationship career coaches have with their students. Most institutions strive to reach a knowledge rate of 65%. Add to that a Career Center team deeply committed to student success, and the impact of Baylor’s Career Center as a valuable partner in each student’s journey toward fulfilling their calling becomes clear.
