In a historic moment for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baylor baseball legend and 2020 Young Alumnus of the Year Max Muncy played a key role in the team’s 2024 World Series championship. Muncy, who holds the Baylor record for the most World Series rings, became the fifth Baylor alumnus to win a World Series title and the first to win twice, following the Dodgers’ victory over the New York Yankees in the 2024 Fall Classic.
Muncy’s path to MLB stardom began during his standout career at Baylor, where he excelled from 2010 to 2012. A Freshman All-American and two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree, Muncy posted a .322 batting average with 16 home runs and 100 RBIs across his sophomore and junior seasons. He helped lead the Bears to a Big 12 title and a Super Regional appearance in 2012 before being selected in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. Muncy faced a slow start after his 2015 debut in the majors, returning to the minors to rebuild his game. After joining the Dodgers in 2018, Muncy contributed to their 2020 World Series win and has now added another title in 2024.
In the 2024 World Series, Muncy was a fixture in the Dodgers’ lineup, starting all five games at third base and batting fifth in L.A.’s dominant run to the 4-1 series victory over the Yankees. Muncy’s career MLB statistics underscore his consistent excellence, including a .228 batting average, 679 hits, 195 home runs, 537 RBIs and 545 runs scored. Reflecting on the team’s achievement, Muncy credited the collective effort of his teammates.
“Everyone had a little part in what happened,” he said, highlighting the determination and resilience that defined their championship journey.
An L.A. fan favorite, Muncy signed a contract extension in the 2023 offseason to stay with the club through 2025, with a club option for 2026.
Muncy and his wife Kelly, BSFCS ’13, met while they were students at Baylor and were married two weeks after his historic home run in the 2018 World Series.
Inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023, Muncy has consistently returned to Baylor Ballpark to speak to the team and visit with Baylor baseball Head Coach Mitch Thompson, who was the assistant head coach during Muncy’s time in Waco.
The Dodgers’ triumph, with Muncy as a key contributor, is a proud moment for Baylor and its baseball program. His success follows the achievements of fellow alumni Shea Langeliers, who reached the World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, and Cody Bradford, who led the Texas Rangers to a title in 2023. Muncy’s accomplishments not only celebrate his individual dedication but also reflect Baylor’s growing influence in Major League Baseball.
