Houston’s Newest Port Commissioner
Port Houston is the busiest waterway in the nation and vital to the region’s economy, and a Baylor Bear will help guide its development and growth. Roland Garcia, B.B.A. ’81, has been appointed port commissioner of the Port of Houston Authority for a two-year term.
The Port of Houston is not only the nation’s largest and busiest port by waterborne tonnage, but it is also a major economic driver for Houston and the state of Texas. The Port's activity supports 1.54 million jobs throughout Texas and 3.37 million jobs nationwide, and it generates more than $439 billion in statewide economic value and $906 billion in nationwide economic value. The Houston Ship Channel contributes nearly $10.6 billion in state and local tax revenue and $62.8 billion in national tax revenue.
A highly respected attorney, Garcia brings an impressive track record of service to the role. Active in the Houston community, Garcia serves as vice chair of the Board of Pilot Commissioners of Harris County Ports and co-chair of the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Board. He is a board member of the Greater Houston Partnership and the Harris County Hospital District Foundation and has previously served as a Harris County – Houston Sports Authority board member.
Garcia also was recognized as a 2024 Global Leader of Influence by the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston. The award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions and shown exceptional leadership in Houston’s international community.
