New York City is the financial capital of the United States (and arguably, the world) — so it was only natural for Baylor finance alumni to gather in the Big Apple.

In December 2024, the Baylor University Office of Investments — the team that has managed the University’s endowment so well their success garnered national attention — brought together Baylor finance alumni in the region for a special dinner, with plans to make the gathering an annual event.

Co-hosted with one of the University’s investment managers, Engaged Capital, Baylor’s Office of Investments connected with Baylor’s strong finance alumni base for a night of green-and-gold festivities and to “plant a flag” for Baylor in New York City.

Having taught practicum classes in the Hankamer School of Business over the past five years, Baylor’s Chief Investment Officer Dave Morehead knows firsthand how good Baylor finance students are.

“While teaching equity analysis for one of the largest student-managed investment portfolios in the country, I’ve been impressed by the quality and depth of work demonstrated by Baylor finance students,” says Morehead. “So much so that we continue to hire Baylor graduates to manage Baylor’s $2.2 billion endowment. In a space where university investment offices are frequently staffed by alums, Baylor’s endowment returns speak to the quality of Baylor’s finance students.”

Many of the recent Baylor graduates who gathered for the evening expressed excitement about welcoming more Baylor alumni to New York, even offering to connect with students considering such a move.

“Not only do we think that it’s important to have more Baylor graduates in NYC, but we believe Baylor students are almost ideally suited for portfolio allocation roles at universities, hospitals, community foundations, family offices, etc.,” says Morehead. “The combination of a strong ethical standing and a commitment to ‘doing the right thing,’ along with a solid core curriculum and hands-on experience, is tough to beat in this space.”
