A Commission of Love
Every year, hundreds of Baylor students devote their spring break or summer months to bringing the love of Christ to others far and near. Whether for mission trips that place them in contact with communities around the world — from Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic to Wales and South Africa — or serving summer campers who need a steady, caring leader, these students are the hands and feet of Christ.
The University supports and prepares these students in an annual commissioning ceremony, following the disciples’ example in gathering to send these short-term missionaries off with prayer and encouragement.
“You are going out for Kingdom work, but you’re also taking Baylor to the world,” University Chaplain Charley Ramsey, B.A. ’97, M.A. ’00, Ph.D., reminded the students at last year’s commissioning ceremony. “Everywhere you go, there will be somebody who needs to hear, who needs to see that love. Just spread that … God is going to do something amazing in your life and other people’s lives. And this is how the Kingdom grows. Our greatest joy at the end of the day is to just be part of the Kingdom.”
Students getting ready to embark on their journeys as either a camp counselor or student missionary also hear from previous students who share their experiences and the impact of their service on their own lives and the lives of those they served. This year, the Student Commissioning Ceremony will uplift and support students as they prepare to be challenged and changed in ways only these experiences can offer. In doing so, they embody the transformational power of Christ’s love both near to home and across the world.
Supporting Student Service
Baylor University’s alumni, parents and friends have long served as the “senders” for Baylor Missions, funding and supporting Baylor’s “goers” — the students, faculty and staff who leave campus to share their faith around the world.
Baylor’s endowment includes 35 endowed funds like the Pullin Family Endowed Fund for Students on Mission, which provides dependable streams of support for the University to plan and execute mission trips. Established in 2014 by Randy, B.B.A. ’82, and Myra Pullin of Houston, the endowed fund created a permanent stream of support for Baylor Missions that will provide the same support to students in 2026 as it will in 2126.
