Soul Care
Holistic care for students, faculty and staff has been a priority of Baylor University throughout its history. From the “Welcome Week wheel” of years gone by to today’s wellbeing initiatives for the campus community, attention to physical, intellectual, mental and spiritual needs is ever-present and ever-evolving.
For students, spiritual wellbeing is supported through a variety of opportunities and practices such as Baylor chapel experiences, prayer groups, Bible study groups in residence halls and student groups, resident chaplain engagement and active involvement in local faith communities.
Faculty and staff also are offered dedicated time and space throughout the year to connect corporately and individually with their spiritual health. One such opportunity is a faculty and staff chapel service held each semester to gather as a Baylor Family for prayer and worship. Chapel services are led by members of area churches whose Christian traditions offer diverse worship styles and meaningful messages. In addition, worship experiences led by Baylor’s Chaplain offer opportunities to participate in Advent and Lent, to pray for the semester and for the wellbeing of students, and to offer expressions of thanksgiving.
In 2023, the University introduced Spiritual Wellbeing leave for staff. Through this initiative, each eligible employee has eight hours of time off during the year to engage in activities that nurture their spiritual health. Whether they choose Bible study, community engagement or service, connections through nature, or other reflective practices, Spiritual Wellbeing leave is a dedicated opportunity for personal growth, deepening faith, self-reflection and rejuvenation.
Baylor’s emphasis on holistic care is one reason why in the annual “Great Colleges to Work For” survey conducted by ModernThink the University achieved honor roll recognition for all categories, including Faculty and Staff Wellbeing. By nurturing spiritual wellbeing, individuals enhance their overall sense of fulfillment, happiness and balance in their personal and professional lives.
