Miracle on the Brazos Turns 50
The proverbial chip on the shoulders of the 1974 Baylor football team loomed large, as the Bears were preseason favorites to finish at the bottom of the Southwest Conference. Even today, that roster of “miracle workers” endures as one of the best in Baylor history, with the 1974 SWC championship team celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Under the tutelage of future Hall of Fame Head Coach Grant Teaff — then in the third of his 21 seasons at Baylor — the Bears notched a 6-1 conference record and earned a trip to the Cotton Bowl.
In what still stands as one of the greatest moments in Baylor football history, the Bears rallied from a 24-7 halftime deficit against 12th-ranked Texas to go on a 27-0 second half run to win, 34-24, in what would be etched in Baylor lore as the “Miracle on the Brazos.”
