Former World War II pilot Bob Lucas, BBA '41, of McKinney, TX, spoke to students at LaPoynor ISD in LaRue, TX, as a part of organization Free to Be's presentation on war, freedom and patriotism. Lucas shared the story of his plane being shot down in Germany and how he was able to successfully escape to Switzerland.

Milam County (TX) and the Milam County Health Department recently honored Dr. Sidney Richardson, AB '49, of Cameron, TX, on his 90th birthday and in celebration of his medical practice and service to the health department for almost 60 years. In the first 35 years, Richardson delivered an estimated 800 babies in Cameron.

Clyde Whiteside, JD '53, of Wichita Falls, TX, has established the Whiteside Museum of Natural History in Seymour, TX, which is in Baylor County and home to one of the best Permian fossil beds in the world. The museum contains rare reptile fossils found in the area, some of which date back 287 million years, before dinosaurs existed. Whiteside's family, which includes his late father, Roy Whiteside, Class of 1913, and Clyde's son, Joseph Roy Whiteside, BS '87, MS '90, has lived in the Seymour area since 1889. Clyde says that his family owes their success largely to the degrees they received from Baylor. While in college, Whiteside served two terms as a member of the Texas legislature and later opened a law office in Seymour. He was elected county attorney and served as district attorney of the 50th Judicial District, as district judge for Montague, Clay and Archer counties, and as presiding judge for many other Texas counties. Jim, JD '54, and Betty (Gilbreath) Price, BS '59, residents at The Stayton at Museum Way retirement community in Fort Worth, were honored at the community's Town Hall meeting April 16 as part of National Volunteer Appreciation Month. Jim, a retired attorney and Navy pilot, still offers legal advice and has been helping a veteran collect necessary paperwork to prove he served in Vietnam. Betty made an impact teaching at Arlington High School and Sam Houston State University. She served on the board of advisors for Baylor's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. They were honored with the Outstanding Baylor Parents Award in 1986, and Betty later received the W.R. White Meritorious Service Award.

Bob Wright, BA '56, was elected to the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame Class of 2015 and will be inducted May 9. A Mexia native, he was elected as the Dave Campbell Contributor to the Game. Wright worked at the Mexia Daily News until retiring in 2010. He covered high school football games for 55 seasons. Among his many awards, Wright received the 2009 Putt Powell Sportswriter of the Year, awarded by the Texas High School Coaches Association. Women in Aviation International announced the induction of mother-daughter team, Deanie and Nancy Parrish, MA '80, of Waco, to its Pioneer Hall of Fame as women who changed aviation history. Their achievements include founding Wings Across America, a nonprofit created at Baylor University and designed to educate people on the history of the WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) of World War II, the first women in American history to fly a military aircraft. Their endeavors include: interviewing and digitally videotaping the oral histories of 105 WASPs across the U.S.; founding the National WASP WWII Museum; and initiating and leading the 2009 campaign to award the WASPs the Congressional Gold Medal (the nation's highest civilian award). They were honored March 5-7 in Dallas.

William Sims, BBA '80, of Dallas, has been appointed CEO of Salmon Sims Thomas and Associates, having previously served as COO. He has more than 30 years of accounting experience and is recognized as an expert in the nonprofit sector with a concentration in religious organizations, agencies, country clubs and associations.

Gregg Swain, PhD '80, of New York, NY, has co-authored the book Mah Jongg (Tuttle 2014: 192 pages), inspired by the art and messages of the Chinese game after which it is named. Her book explores the significance of the artistic messaging on the game’s tiles through commentary and photographs. Swain serves on numerous boards and committees, including the Board of Southern Vermont College.

Dr. Nancy (Whiteside) Brickhouse, BA '82, has been named provost of St. Louis University, effective July 1. She is an administrator at the University of Delaware, where she is credited with strengthening the university's research productivity, developing diversity strategies and launching a medical school application program. Brickhouse held a number of leadership positions in Delaware's College of Education and Human Development, where she garnered international acclaim as a researcher. Her writings have been credited with informing the National Academy of Sciences’ K-12 framework for science education.

James Dorsett, BA '84, is now director of the Office for International Students and Scholars at Michigan State University. Dorsett provides leadership for one of the nation's largest and most prominent offices, serving 7,700 international students, scholars and their families. His career in international education spans more than 20 years, including at Iowa State University, Wayne State University, Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Larry Johnson, MHA '84, of San Antonio, received the Federal Excellence in Healthcare Management Award at the annual American College of Healthcare Executives Congress in Chicago on March 17. Shelley (Graves) Giglio, BBA '86, and Louie Giglio, '90, were named honorary award winners at this year's Gospel Music Association Honors for their work with Passion, a Bible study they founded at Baylor, which has grown into an international ministry called the Passion Movement. The Passion Conferences have reached thousands of college students around the world. Their vision led the Giglios to launch Passion City Church in Atlanta, GA, and sixstepsrecords, home to Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and many others. Shelley serves as a member of the Baylor Board of Regents.

Jay Hunter Morris, BMEd '86, of Roswell, GA, was honored as a Paris Junior College Distinguished Alumnus in November. He is a world-class tenor opera singer, Grammy-winner and author. He earned a master of music in vocal performance at Southern Methodist University and studied for two years at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. The Wagner's Ring cycle role of Siegfried, a difficult and lengthy role few tenors can sing, brought Morris international acclaim.

Robin Russell, JD '86, has been named one of "Houston's 50 most influential women of 2014" by Houston Woman Magazine. She is a managing partner with Andrews Kurth LLP and is the co-chair of the firm’s bankruptcy and financial restructuring section.

Bryce Williams, BA '86, of Dallas, has been named president and CEO of SeeChange Health, a company that focuses on its consumer engagement and health improvement platform. He previously served the managing director of Towers Watson's Exchange Solutions business segment and led the largest private Medicare health insurance exchange in the country. Williams cofounded Extend Health Inc. and was its president and CEO from 2004 through the company’s acquisition in 2012. In 2011, Williams was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year for Northern California in Business Services.

Glenn Farren, BBA '91, has been appointed to an executive position at the Port of Long Beach in CA. Previously, he was a general manager for the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd America. In his new position, he will work to improve relationships with companies doing business on port property.

Melvin Hunt, BBA '91, MSEd '95, was named interim head coach of the NBA's Denver Nuggets on March 3. Hunt is in his third season with Denver after five seasons as a Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach. He also was an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. Hunt was a three-year starter on Baylor's basketball team.

Dr. David Nowell, PhD '91, of Jefferson City, TN, has authored Dirty Faith: Bringing the Love of Christ to the Least of These. The book challenges Christians to understand how loving as God loves is central to the Christian faith. Nowell is an author, speaker and president of Hope Unlimited for Children, a Christian nonprofit that ministers to sex-trafficked children, street orphans and child prisoners.

Asa Hutchinson named Aaron Burkes, JD '93, president of the Arkansas Development Finance Authority, which administers funding in the form of tax-exempt bonds and other debt instruments for economic development, home ownership and affordable rental housing. A former Arkansas state representative, Burkes has been an administrator at Madison College in Wisconsin.

The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians has named Jeff Cook, BBA '93, president and CEO of Insurance Services for Seton Healthcare Family, as a new board member. The nonprofit organization focuses on providing affordable healthcare for low-income musicians. Prior to joining Seton in 2009, Cook held escalating positions within UnitedHealthcare, including Texas vice president of network development and, most recently, CEO of UnitedHealthcare in Texas.

Dr. Christopher Hanks, BA '93, MSEd '99, has been named the principal of Grand Rapids, MI, Public Museum School. He is an assistant professor in Grand Valley State University's Undergraduate Foundations of Education Program and previously taught in La Vega (TX) ISD.

Chris Hill, MHA '93, of Gilbert, AZ, has been appointed the new CEO of St. Luke's Medical Center and Tempe St. Luke's Hospital. Prior to his promotion, Hill served as COO for both hospitals. He is also retired from the United States Army, with a Lieutenant Colonel ranking.

John Reid, BA '93, is now chief communications officer at the national headquarters of Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, the oldest and largest organization representing post-9/11 veterans. A former television news anchor and communications director in the U.S. Senate, Reid lived and worked across the Arabian Peninsula and Middle East while serving as the director of international development for one of Washington, D.C.'s, leading consultancies. At the height of the Iraq War he also traveled to Baghdad and Erbil, Iraq to counsel members of the new Iraqi Parliament. He maintains homes in Virginia and New York City.

David Roberts, BBA '93, has been promoted to president and COO of American Traffic Solutions in Tempe, AZ. He will lead both the state and local government solutions and fleet services business units and be responsible for managing and implementing the company's strategic plan. David Crowder, '97, of Atlanta, GA, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for his No. 1 hit single "Come As You Are" from his first solo album "Neon Steeple." This is the first Grammy nomination of his solo career. He made a tour stop at Baylor on April 8. Crowder and fellow musicians Robbie Seay, '03, Sean Groves, and Leslie Jordan will also be featured at a new youth worship leader camp held concurrently with this summer's Alleluia Conference at Baylor from July 21-24.

James Carter, JD '98, has joined the San Antonio-based law firm Langley & Banack Inc. He specializes in real estate, oil and gas and probate and trust litigation. Carter has also been named "Best Lawyer" in civil litigation by San Antonio Magazine every year since 2010 and was selected as a "Rising Star" by Thomson Reuters' Texas Super Lawyers in 2012.

Michelle Potter, BA '98, received the January 2015 Chapter Champion Award from the Georgia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. She is the marketing communications manager for Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates. We are so excited for our son, Jaxon Cota, who appeared on the show Child Genius, which started Jan. 6 on Lifetime. It is a national academic competition and documentary showing 20 children from around the U.S. with genius IQs. Jaxon is a huge Baylor fan, and even though he just turned 11, he plans on attending Baylor! Go Bears!" 

Brandi (Rickard) McBride, BSEd '99, of Hudsonville, MI, has been appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder to the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund board of trustees. McBride will help the board oversee trust fund expenditures and awards grants to eligible veterans. She serves as a veteran service manager for Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1999-2007.

Chris Slaughter, BBA '99, MS '00, of Kingwood, TX, published Abide in Me (Xlibris 2014, 142 pages), a book about his family's struggles. He writes, "In 2011, my daughter was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease and began chemo treatments at age six. Her healing from that disease was miraculous and left her physicians baffled, but just after finishing chemo treatments in 2013, she fell ill again. That disease remains undiagnosed, but it mirrors a very rare form of encephalitis. She had days where she couldn't walk, talk, or see, and didn't recognize my wife, Elaine (Gardner) Slaughter, BSEd '00, and me. Despite having no medications for her second disease, my daughter's gradual healing again left her doctor's dumbfounded. She is now a straight-A student in fourth grade, team-level gymnast, and has been symptom-free for months. This book captures our spiritual struggles and shares our story of hope with the world."

Dr. Kenneth Border, EdD '04, is now superintendent of school for Shallowater (TX) ISD. He is president-elect of the Texas Middle School Association for 2014-15 and will be president in 2015-16. Among his honors, Border has been named a principal of the year twice, made the "20 under 40" list named by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and received a Jefferson Award for public service. He is also a volunteer on the boards of the Ronald McDonald House, the Lubbock Boys and Girls Club, the Shallowater Lions Club, the Shallowater Education Foundation, and is active in his church.

Brandon Cope, BA '04, MSEd '12, is now director of Greater Waco Manufacturing Academy, a Waco ISD magnet school focused on providing welding; robotics and electronics; and precision metal courses. Cope, who previously served as the principal of Crestview Elementary School, is focused on making sure the Academy's enrollment continues to grow and it becomes a "self-funded school." In its second year, enrollment has more than doubled to 176 students.

Craig Cunningham, BA '08, of Austin, wrote and directed his first feature film, Genesis, a cinematic look at the first book of the Bible. It has been featured at Waco's Hippodrome, and Cunningham hopes to screen it in more cities as word-of-mouth spreads through churches and moviegoers.

Jennifer Fox, MBA '09, president of FRHI Hotels & Resorts, International Division, and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, has been named to Inspirato’s board of directors. Inspirato, in Denver, is considered the largest destination club in the world. Filmmaker Katarzyna Plazinska, MA '11, screened several of her short films at the opening of the MacDowell, NH, film season at The Monadnock Center for History and Culture.
