Anita S. Baker

Anita Sue Baker, M.S.Ed. ’79, of Sachse, Texas, passed away on July 3 after bravely facing complex medical challenges. Born on May 12, 1938, in Port Arthur, Texas, Baker was the daughter of John and Dora O’Quinn. She began her journey at Baylor University as a music major, where she met her late husband, Eugene W. Baker, B.A. ’58, M.A. ’61. After Gene Baker’s graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, leading to a period in Japan. Baker then supported Gene with their church activities while pursuing her own educational journey.

Baker completed her bachelor’s degree in education at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. The couple settled in Waco until 2022, when they moved to the Dallas area to be closer to their children. Baker went on to earn her master’s degree from Baylor and her Ph.D. in education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her career at Baylor University spanned 33 years, during which she became a beloved professor in early childhood education, leaving an indelible mark on the field. Her influence was commemorated during Baylor’s School of Education centennial for her profound impact on shaping educators worldwide.

Baker’s dedication to education remains unparalleled. Countless teachers attribute their passion and teaching philosophies to her guidance and mentorship. Baker’s legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched, both in education and beyond.
