We've Got Spirit

Squads celebrate a century of rallying the Green and Gold

The Baylor Spirit program celebrated 100 years of leading the Baylor Family in cheering for the Bears in 2021. Established in 1920 as the Yell Leaders, an all-male team, the program transformed into the Co-ed Yell Leaders in 1968. As the University’s enrollment and fan base continued to grow, the Songleaders Dance Team was established in 1975. With the addition of Bruiser, the University’s costumed mascot in 1981 and the All-Girl Yell Leaders in 2004, the group recognized an opportunity to again expand its reach. In 2017, Marigold, the female costumed mascot, joined the ranks.

The spirit squads don the green and gold on the sidelines of all Baylor’s 19 NCAA athletics programs and represent the University in the Waco community. Built on a foundation of service to the University and the community, the spirit squads believe service is the ultimate form of leadership. Members give hundreds of hours each year representing the University throughout the community, in schools, at alumni events and more.
