C.T. “Sparkey” Beckham, BBA ’49, and Merrie Beckham, ABC ’86, of Dallas paid tribute to their daughter through the establishment the C.T. “Sparkey” and Merrie Beckham Endowed Scholarship in Nursing in Memory of Sara Beckham Foxworth, as part of the Hord Challenge Program. Merrie Beckham also received the Alumna by Choice of the Year Award, which will henceforth be named in her honor.

Dr. Thomas Edwin Cook, BS ’50, MD ’52, and Bobbie Joyce Cravey Cook served as missionaries throughout the world, including Korea, where they served for more than five years.

Charles Whiteside and Jo Ann Whiteside, BA ’55, of Kilgore, TX, established the Darwin Whiteside Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund was established in honor of Charles’ brother Darwin Whiteside for his 99th birthday and supports students pursuing degrees in aviation sciences.

The Thomas Wesley Purdy Jr. and Janet Ross Purdy Endowed Scholarship Fund, a Hord Challenge Scholarship, was established in honor of Tom Purdy, BA ’61, and Jan Purdy, BA ’64, MSEd ’94, by their loving family. This scholarship supports students in the School of Education. 

John W. Roppolo, BA ’61, of Dallas was recognized by Metrocrest Services with its “Seasons of Service” for outstanding community volunteerism. He was previously honored by the American Heart Association, Leadership Dallas Alumni, City of Carrollton, National Catholic Education Association, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Public Relations Society of America, Mosaic, Baylor Alpha Tau Omega, and Cistercian Preparatory School. He has been married to Marilyn Royce Roppolo of Tyler, TX, for 57 years, and they have four children and 11 grandchildren.

Dr. W. Dennis Stripling, BS ’64attended the University of Texas Medical Branch for medical training and Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center for internship and orthopedic residency. He was the U.S. Army flight surgeon for Thailand. Stripling did specialty training in hand surgery with Boyes, Stark, Ashworth and Zemel in Los Angeles and has enjoyed 40 years of practice in hand surgery at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. He was chairman of the board of trustees for Texas Health Resources for three years and was the first physician to hold this position. Stripling and his wife Bettye are the proud parents of Denny Loveless, BS ’93, MA ’95, and Susan Loveless, BA ’95, and they have three wonderful grandchildren. Bill Smothers, BA ’66, of Virginia Beach, VA, established the William W. Smothers Endowed Scholarship Fund, a Hord Challenge Scholarship, to support students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Fernando R. Elizondo, MS ’68, of Salinas, CA, is a retired educator after a 35-year career in which he was a classroom teacher, director, middle school principal and assistant superintendent, and was a superintendent for 15 years. Elizondo established a consultant education firm in retirement. He earned a doctorate from the University of Southern California. Allen Wier, BA ’68, received the sixth-annual Truman Capote Prize for Distinguished Work in Literary Non-Fiction or the Short Story. The Capote Prize is sponsored by Dianne Lawson Baker and is chaired by Don Noble.

Alan Saltzman, BA ’69, and Diana Gorena Saltzman, BA ’68, of San Antonio established the Alan and Diana Gorena Saltzman Endowed Scholarship Fund in Education. This scholarship supports secondary education majors who intend to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). It also assists elementary education majors who are pursuing a special education teaching career.

Robert “Peach” W. Pietzsch, BBA ’70, authored Troman, a fantasy novel available through Amazon in paperback and e-book. A trailer for the book can be viewed by searching “tromanofficialtrailer” online. Jeffrey H. Collins, BA ’74, is a professor of archaeology and interdisciplinary studies at Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven, GA. While at Baylor (1970-74), Collins was sophomore class president and president of Sigma Tau Delta. He recently published three books of poetry: The Archipelagos of Summer: Poems of the Greek IslandsIlluminations in Italy: Poems and Lyrical Essays and Quantum Canticles.

The Janis K. Kovar Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing, a Hord Challenge Scholarship, was established by Pam Jones and Mike Jones, BBA ’75, JD ’77, of Flint, TX. This fund honors Janis Kovar for her years of service in promoting the interests of the Baylor Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Donna Stewart Phillips, BA ’75, of Charlotte, NC, established the Dr. Ed and Nola Stewart and Mrs. Donna Stewart Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of her parents. This fund is part of the Hord Challenge Program and supports Baylor nursing students.

Sharon L. Treadaway, BA ’75, of La Marque, TX, established the Bertie “Polly” and Gordon Treadaway Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Nursing in memory of her parents. This scholarship is part of the Hord Challenge Program.

Chris Wommack, BM ’76, MSEd ’87, and Susan Wommack, JD ’89, of McGregor, TX, established the Chris and Susan Jeter Wommack Endowed Scholarship Fund in Music to support students pursuing a composition degree in the School of Music.  

Philip Poole, BA ’77, completed his fifth semester of adjunct teaching in public relations at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This is a second career after taking early retirement in 2018 as executive director of university communications at Samford University in Birmingham. Poole recently joined the executive committee for the Public Relations Society of America College of Fellows, a select group of 350 public relations professionals from across the U.S. and Canada. He and his wife Shellyn recently relocated to the Mobile, Alabama, area to be near their three granddaughters.

Wes Bailey, BBA’ 78, of Bailey Insurance and Risk Management was honored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC) for 40 years of committed professional leadership and service. Bailey joins an elite group of CIC designees who have reached the 40-year milestone. Furthermore, he serves on the organization’s national faculty and has taught his peers the specifics of the commercial general liability policy in more than 30 states for the past 30 years.

William H. Sims, BBA ’80, was named CPA of the Year by the Dallas chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (Dallas TXCPA) for his outstanding leadership and meritorious contributions to the accounting profession. TXCPA is the largest, most influential association of accounting and finance professionals in Texas, of which Sims has been an active member throughout his 40-plus-year career. Currently, Sims is CEO and partner of Dallas-based SST Accountants & Consultants.

Roland Garcia, BBA ’81, was nominated by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and unanimously approved by the Houston City Council for another term to the board of Pilot Commissioners for Harris County Ports. The commission also unanimously elected Garcia to serve as vice chairman of the board and chairman of the diversity committee. The commission has exclusive jurisdiction over the piloting of vessels in Harris County ports, including intermediate stops and landing places for vessels on navigable streams wholly or partially located in the board’s jurisdiction. In 2019, there were 18,748 vessel movements in Port Houston, including sailings, arrivals and shifts of all types. Annette L. Olson, BS ’82, PhD, was recognized by Facebook as a “Leading Lady” in the “Hall of Her” for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. Olson was honored for her efforts in creating and growing Climate Steps, a strong, collaborative climate-action organization and Facebook group. Long a federal and nonprofit scientist and educator, Olson founded the nonprofit Climate Steps to help people learn the many impactful ways they can fight climate change. Betsy Farmer Adams, BS ’84, published her first children’s devotional in October 2020. Saved! Now What? is a 21-day devotional designed for elementary-age children who have recently accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. With kid-friendly language and several interaction pieces, the devotional teaches children about the next steps after salvation. The daily discussions remind children that what they think about and how they fill their minds are a direct reflection of their relationship with God. Short devotions share the importance of prayer, worship, praise, Bible study and choosing friends wisely.

Dr. Peter A. McCullough, BS ’84, has been a leader in the medical response to SARS-CoV-2 since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. He published Pathophysiological Basis and Rationale for Early Outpatient Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Infection, the first synthesis of sequenced multidrug treatment of ambulatory patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 in The American Journal of Medicine and subsequently updated in Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine. McCullough has 28 peer-reviewed publications on the infection and has commented extensively on the medical response to the COVID-19 pandemic in The Hill. He testified Nov. 19, 2020, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs concerning early ambulatory treatment of high-risk Americans with COVID-19 to reduce hospitalization and death. McCullough is the vice chair of internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Beverly Schofield Clark, BS ’85, was named a “Best of the Best Award” winner by Rent My Wedding magazine for being one of the five best planners in the southern region. Rent My Wedding is the nation’s largest online event rental company and a nationwide wedding magazine. Each year, hundreds of finalists are nominated for an online poll and more than 10,000 votes are cast. The five vendors with the most votes in each category are named “Best of the Best Award” winners and invited to a ceremony distinguishing exceptional businesses and individuals in the wedding and special event industry. Cindy Hobson, BS ’85, was ordained as a deacon March 14 at First Baptist Church of San Marcos, TX. She is amazed and humbled by this honor. Hobson is an aquatic biologist or professional mermaid, depending on a person’s point of view. She enjoys the perks of living in a town where she can swim or paddle in the clear, 72-degree river at any time of the year. She recently became a certified master naturalist and is active in building hiking trails with the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance.

Armando Jacinto, BS ’86, was promoted from assistant athletic director to athletic director for Spring [Texas] ISD. Jacinto was also selected as the first president of the Hispanic Texas High School Football Coaches Association.

Greg Funderburk, BA ’87, published Let It Be Said We’ve Borne It Well. From classic literature to popular music, from modern poetry to professional sports, from ancient history to global travel, and from the sacred to the mundane, the book draws on all manner of stories to provide encouragement for all who have struggled through the pandemic and through the ongoing uncertainty, anxiety and doubts of our times. Funderburk brings clarity to the present moment, setting out a navigational framework for gathering perseverance, grit and grace to help people endure using a kind of thought experiment that asks: What does our current circumstance require of us so that, when we look back, we can honestly say we’ve handled this season of crisis well, seeking and following God faithfully all the way through? Funderburk is a pastoral care minister, lawyer and writer. He also authored The Mourning Wave, a Kirkus Reviews Best of 2020 novel about the 1900 Galveston hurricane. Funderburk lives in Houston with his wife Kelly. They have two sons: Hank and Charlie.

Debbie Scott, MS ’87, published 52 More Programs that Pop, her second book on senior-adult activities. The book is designed for activities directors in long-term care centers, churches and community groups working with senior adults. It offers practical, creative, informative and fun activities to enhance the lives of senior adults. Released in March, the book is available via Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online sources.

1990s

Vickilyn Frank Alvey, BA ’91, graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Master of Science in Nursing in February 2020. She earned a Master of Counseling from the University of Phoenix in 1998. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alvey was a volunteer nurse at Phoenix-area community clinics and a substitute nurse for 16 schools in her local district. She earned an Arizona real estate license during the summer between her sophomore and junior years at Baylor. She has spent most of her career as a real estate agent, private property manager and property-flip coordinator. Alvey currently serves on her city’s planning and zoning commission and occasionally contributes articles to the local newspaper.

Jeffery D. Price, BBA ’92, was included in the Barron’s 2021 “Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” list and the Forbes 2021 “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” list. This is the ninth consecutive year he has been named to the Barron’s list and the fourth consecutive year he has been recognized on the Forbes list. David Gilmore, BBA ’98, was promoted to deputy chief investment officer at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in Owings Mills, Maryland. Gilmore has worked at the foundation for more than six years. It has $3 billion in assets and will make more than $125 million in grant distributions in 2021.

Daniel G. Williamson, BBA ’98, PhD ’05, and Jennifer Nivin Williamson, MSEd ’98, PhD ’05, authored and edited Distance Counseling and Supervision: A Guide for Mental Health Clinicians, a book published by the American Counseling Association. Carol Bailiff Bullman, BS ’99, authored Your Nursery Is an Everywhere, a picture book published in May by Blue Whale Press. A mother’s boundless love for her new baby transforms one little nursery into the whole beautiful world, full of dreams waiting to come true. The story was inspired, in part, by a line in a John Donne poem Bullman studied while at Baylor.

Leo Percer, PhD ’99, established the Doctor of Philosophy in Theology and Apologetics at Liberty University in 2008 and became the program’s director. In 2020, the program graduated its 50th PhD recipient. Many of its graduates serve in a variety of academic and ministry positions around the world. Mike Alexander, BSEd ’01, joined globally renowned Healy Global Relocation, a Dallas- based company, after spending nearly two decades as a celebrity trainer in Los Angeles. Alexander is the business development director of Healy Global Relocation’s entertainment division, primarily focusing on the celebrity and athlete division. “Joining the team at Healy Global Relocation allows me to stay connected to my longtime clients while also continuing to provide them the same level of service,” Alexander said. “I am thrilled for this evolution in my career and look forward to the future of Healy Global Relocation.” During his nearly 20-year tenure as a trainer, Alexander worked with several celebrities, including training Jessica Simpson for her role in Dukes of Hazzard. Other clients include Kristin Chenoweth, Emelia Clarke, Kristin Cavallari, Evan Peters and Eve Hewson.

Amy Wolf, MAcc ’00 and Geoff Wolf, BA ’99, of Cypress, TX, established the Geoff and Amy Wolf Endowed Scholarship Fund in Graduate Accounting. This fund supports graduate-level accounting students in their final year of study to ensure they have resources to obtain a master’s degree.

Charles B. “Trey” Hagins III, BBA ’00, MBA ’07, was named managing director of development for the Hankamer School of Business. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Liz Cox Hagins, BSE ’00, who is an English teacher and department chair at Midway Middle School in Hewitt, TX. Rev. Tito Madrazo, BA ’01, MA ’03, published Predicadores: Hispanic Preaching and Immigrant Identity through the Baylor University Press. In the book, Madrazo explores the sermons of Hispanic protestant preachers within the context of their individual and communal journeys.

Andrew Cunningham, BBA ’02, was promoted to senior vice president at PlainsCapital Bank’s private bank in Lubbock, TX. He has been with PlainsCapital Bank for five years and has 15 years of financial services experience. Cunningham received an MBA with a concentration in finance from Texas Tech University. Nora Frost, BA ’02, was named public information director for the City of Los Angeles Department of City Planning. She is in charge of communication for the nation’s largest urban planning department, which serves 4 million residents by promoting sustainable and equitable city planning initiatives in the city’s diverse communities. This is a particularly important role for the economic recovery and transformative planning of Los Angeles. Frost was a journalism and Spanish dual major at Baylor and earned a master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in Spain.

Kelly Fleming-Brooks, BS ’03, develops and leads the sustainability division as director of project management for Realterm, a real estate operator headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland. Realterm honored Fleming-Brooks on International Women’s Day by celebrating her career and her new role with the company. Fleming-Brooks attended Baylor on a softball scholarship and earned a Master of Public Administration in 2016 from Ashford University, which became the University of Arizona Global Campus in 2021.

Courtney Gahm-Oldham, BBA ’03, is a member of the Houston office of Frost Brown Todd LLC, one of the nation’s largest law firms. Her colleagues selected Gahm-Oldham as a Houstonia magazine “Top Lawyer” for construction law in 2020.

Pablo “Daniel” Rodriguez, EdD ’03, and Yolanda Reyna, EdD ’08, authored Stepping Stones to Student Success: A COVID-19 Resource Manual. The resource manual, available in English and Spanish, is designed to provide information on tuition assistance, community resources, mental health assistance and other basic needs to students attending two-year colleges in Texas and their families. J.T. Snipes, BA ’04, published Remixed and Reimagined: Innovations in Religion, Spirituality, (Inter)Faith, his first co-edited volume, which explores theoretical innovations and personal narratives related to the study of religion and spirituality in higher education. The volume is available through publisher Myers Educational Press and Amazon. The book’s green and gold cover is a tribute to his alma mater.

Mimi Perreault, BA ’05, PhD, and her husband Greg Perreault, PhD, and children Evangeline, 9, Margery, 6, Kyrie Caroline, 4, and William, 2, spent the spring semester in Vienna as Greg was on a Fulbright Award there. Earlier this year, they stopped by Baylor to take photos near Pat Neff Hall. Mimi and Greg also authored Journalists on COVID Journalism: Communication Media Ecology of Pandemic Reporting, an article published in American Behavioral Scientist. Kirby A. Jennings Key, BSN ’06, and Rob Key of Dallas, established the Kirby A. Jennings Key and Rob Key Endowed Scholarship in Nursing. This scholarship is part of the Hord Challenge Program and supports Baylor nursing students. 

Tarra Thomas Sharp, BBA ’06, launched the investment fund JHMacon Capital to locate, buy and operate a small business-to-business services business. She is excited to pursue her entrepreneur dream and buy a great company. JHMacon is named in honor of her third great-grandparents John and Hattie Maco, her family’s first business owners. Erik Speer, MBA ’07, and Zoe Speer of Kennesaw, GA, established the Bright Light Endowed Scholarship Fund in Memory of Blythe Madelynne Speer. The scholarship is part of the Hord Challenge Program and honors the memory of their daughter. The head of Blythe’s school said: “There are some who bring light so bright for the world that even after they have gone, the light remains.” This scholarship pays a lasting tribute to her bright light.

Trey Duck, BA ’08, JD ’12, became a partner at Austin- based law firm Nix Patterson LLP. He joined Nix Patterson immediately after graduating from Baylor Law School. The firm was founded by Harold Nix, LLB ’65, and has enjoyed immense success with a roster of mostly Baylor lawyers. Since joining the firm, Duck has represented an array of clients in high-profile litigation and trials throughout the U.S. He is married to Lillyan Baker Duck, BA ’10. Taylor Lyons Mohr, BA ’09, JD ’12, became board certified in family law in 2019, an accomplishment that 1 percent of Texas lawyers have achieved. She was named a Texas Super Lawyers “Rising Star” each year from 2017 to 2021 and a D Magazine “Best Lawyer Under 40” in 2020. Mohr is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. Amanda June McLachlan, BA ’12, and Nathaniel Grey Jones married Nov. 7, 2020, at Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The date held significance for the bride, whose parents Donald McLachlan, BA ’78, JD ’79, and Iva Wolf, BA ’78, JD ’80, were engaged Nov. 7, 1980, in the Alexander Drawing Room on the first floor of Alexander Residence Hall during Baylor Homecoming. The bride’s father performed the ceremony. Nathaniel is a physician assistant for cardiac surgery throughout Dallas-Fort Worth, and Amanda is director of marketing and events for Philanthropy Southwest. They reside in Dallas.

Miranda Leddy, BA ’12, MA ’14, and Steven Scire married Dec. 11, 2020, in Fredericksburg, TX. They reside in Prosper, TX. Miranda is a child development and early education doctoral candidate at Texas Woman’s University.

Andrew Valencia, BA ’12, JD ’16, is a litigation associate at Ballard Spahr LLP. He was accepted into the Downtown Denver Partnership’s 2021 leadership program, which educates participants about the economic importance of downtown Denver and engages them in the creation of the area’s future. Participants represent a cross-section of metro-area employees as well as public, private and nonprofit employers who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the community, a passion for downtown Denver and an interest in building their leadership skills.

Allison Hatfield Beard, BA ’13, and Duncan Beard, BA ’15, of Houston established the Beard Family Golden Wave Band Endowed Fund to support the Golden Girls program. Allison was a Golden Girls feature twirler during her time at Baylor.

Caleb Clark, BFA ’15, and Emily Roberson, BA ’14, married Feb. 28 in Austin. They met as Baylor freshmen while rehearsing for All University Sing. 

Bree Schrader, BS ’15, MS ’16, and Isaac Forrester, BS ’15, MA ’16, married June 1, 2019. They reside in Houston with their dog Scout. They are loved dearly by friends and family near and far.

Dr. Andrea Schlosser, BBA ’16, graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. She was accepted into a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Meredith, BS ’17, earned NASA’s Space Flight Awareness Trailblazer Award in February for his contributions to the Exploration Ground Systems team at Kennedy Space Center and outstanding support to NASA’s human spaceflight mission. Brant has been a handling and mechanical engineer for Jacobs Engineering since July 2017.

Victoria Rose, BA ’17, earned a Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law and a Master of Environmental Management from Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment in May. She is the daughter of Richard Rose, BBA ’84, and Lori Rose. Victoria’s parents are proud of her accomplishments and wish her the very best as she moves into the workforce.

Alyssa Alaniz, BS ’18, and Seth Emig, BS ’19, married Nov. 20, 2020, in Houston, where they live. Seth is a research and development engineer at an oil and gas service company, and Alyssa is a biomedical sciences PhD candidate at Baylor College of Medicine.

Evan Cross, BS ’18, and Jackie Borok, BA ’17, were married Aug. 29, 2020, in McMinnville, OR. Jackie graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in June, and Evan begins his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Washington in September.

Kailey Davis, BA ’20, graduated early, summa cum laude, University Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, and is interning at Heal the City in Amarillo, TX. She was awarded the U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship and commissioned into the Navy in March. Davis will attend Saint Louis University School of Medicine this fall.

BrenShavia Jordan, BA ’20, is grateful for her time at Baylor, which she believes prepared for life after college and to be successful in her career. Jordan is a news reporter at Waco’s KWKT Fox 44. She was a part of Baylor’s journalism program and a reporter with Lariat TV News, and she is grateful for the support she received from the faculty and the many mentors who helped guide her. Kaylee King, BA ’18, MS ’19, and Caleb Ray, BA ’18, married in a family ceremony in March 2020 and held a wedding celebration Jan. 23, 2021. They met at Harris Creek Baptist Church as Baylor sophomores. Kaylee was Baylor’s 2019 Homecoming Queen. Caleb is a police officer, and Kaylee is a speech-language pathologist. They live in Aubrey, TX, with their precious dog Ellie Mae.

Alexander Patterson, BA ’18, and Casey Gardner, BS ’20, married March 20 in Fort Worth. They met while at Baylor. The couple currently resides in Fort Worth, where Casey is a doctoral candidate and Alexander teaches.

Daniel Trejo-Serrano, MBA ’20, was promoted to content producer for ESPN’s Outside the Lines. He has been a tireless contributor for ESPN’s international production team, using his natural curiosity to consistently develop his skills and content. Trejo-Serrano helped lead the company-wide efforts for ESPN Deportes’ 15th anniversary campaign, and he has segment produced for international shows such as SportsCenterJorge Ramos y Su Banda and Futbol Picante. His diverse array of experience also includes field producing and overseeing production management of large-scale events, including the 2018 and 2019 UEFA Champions League Finals and six Super Bowls.

2020s

Christina Bottenfield, BBA ’20, MAcc ’20, and Jonathan Keen, BBA ’20, married April 18, 2020, in a small family ceremony in Belton, TX. The couple met during 2016 Welcome Week, and their first date was to a Baylor Women’s Basketball game during their sophomore year. They now live in Phoenix, where Christina is a capital analyst and Jonathan is a finance doctoral candidate at Arizona State University.

Claire Hudson Brown, BS ’20 and William Brown, BA ’18, MST ’20, married Dec. 12, 2020, in Wharton, TX. The couple met through Baylor Crew in 2016 and currently live in Houston. Claire is a kindergarten teacher, and William works in state and local tax at KPMG.
