Family Connections

Alumni who want to connect with each other in meaningful ways should consider joining a Baylor Alumni Affinity Group. These groups are based on shared interests, such as professions, academic fields of study, personal interests and activities. Each group offers a number of ways to get involved, including social events, networking opportunities and more.

The Baylor Women’s Council, one of the 18 Affinity Groups, is an amazing collection of women who support each other and the University they love. Members are alumnae, parents and supporters who have a heart for strengthening Baylor. They make a difference through financial support of Women’s Council scholarships, opening doors to the University for students.

Kennisha Moffet, B.B.A. ’97, was compelled to join the Baylor Women’s Council in 2017 when both of her children were enrolled at the University. Although she is a Hankamer School of Business graduate, Moffet admits that networking is not her forte. She prayed that God would lead her to a place in which she would thrive in her networking efforts.

“The next day, I received an email inviting me to the Austin Baylor networking event,” Moffet says. “It was co-hosted by the Business Group and the Women’s Council. I thought, ‘Wow, this is probably God.’ I felt such an ease and had a great time. The rapport was already there because we’re all Bears.”

Through local groups, Women’s Council members have the opportunity to link arms with strong, intelligent and fun women from across the nation. Moffet has made lifelong friends through the Women’s Council, and she has grown through meeting many fellow Baylor alumni and friends. The first person she met at that initial meeting was Baylor Senior Director of Alumni Engagement Virginia Ellis, who eventually tabbed Moffet as vice president of membership for the Austin chapter.

“Virginia has made sure that I’ve been able to use my areas of strength,” Moffet says. “It’s not anything I would have ever seen myself doing; but, once I decided to join the board, I became an advocate overnight. As a parent of two Baylor students, I had great insight by the time I started serving on the Women’s Council.”

Moffet says the impact of connectivity is immeasurable and often difficult to understand until joining an Affinity Group, which she encourages others to do.

“For many of us, once we leave Baylor, we want to give back to the University, and the Women’s Council provides that opportunity,” Moffet says. “We do life with each other and help each other. It expands our network and our reach to get and give the support each of us needs. You feel connected — through the good and the bad.”

While her connection with Ellis was the initial reason Moffet joined the Women’s Council, she has been blessed by many others in the group and Baylor Alumni Engagement.

“So many networking events are about gaining something or getting something from people or accomplishing your own goals,” Moffet says. “But Virginia sets the bar where it’s truly about people. I felt immediately accepted, loved and valued. We are fierce Bears.”
