Martha Bell (Smith) Holton, BA '32, celebrated her 103rd birthday with family and friends in Waco on Oct. 30, 2014. Born in 1911, in Port Arthur, she attended Baylor College for Women and graduated from Baylor University in 1932. She taught school for three years and married James A. Holton Sr. on Nov. 7, 1936. The couple moved to the Hill Country between Kerrville and Junction, where they raised cattle, sheep and goats. Martha taught at a one-room schoolhouse for the neighboring ranch children. They bought the Kerrville Locker Meat Processing Plant and ran it for almost 30 years. After their children were grown, they traveled the world, with fishing in Canada and Panama their favorite repeat stops. James died in 1986 after their 50th anniversary. In May 2008, Martha moved to Lakeshore Retirement Estates to be closer to family. Her family includes a son, Jimmy Holton of China Spring; daughter-in-law Dorothy Brown of Lorena; and four granddaughters, Terri Craft of Gholson, Salli Allen of Robinson, Holly Wolaver of Robinson and Courtney Holton of Austin.

Dr. Bonnie Blacklock, BA '38, MD '63, of Austin, has authored Doctor in a Dress, the Life and Times of Bonnie Jean Blacklock, MD (2013 - 237 pages). She writes, "I didn't get into medical school the first time I applied. I was appalled when the dean looked me straight in the eye and said, 'Mrs. Blacklock, if we accept you, we'll be taking that position away from a man who has a family to support.' I left in a huff, making it clear I didn't see his point. This book is a love story that endured seven decades. Gently throw in a nudge for women's rights, family values, and a liberal helping of tragedy--all in a memoir." Blacklock intersperses excerpts from her husband's letters during college and World War II. She has carefully recorded hers and David's remarkable journey. William Horick, BA '50, of Temple, TX, has written The Helpers (Outskirts Press, 2014: 210 pages), a novel with a story spanning 51 years, with much of it set on Baylor's campus. The two central characters are ex-GIs from World War II who meet as freshmen in 1946. Horick includes campus expansion details and even a Homecoming parade. The story contains a distinct Christian message about forgiveness, trust, acceptance, and citizenship.
"Above all else, it is a remarkable love story between two lonely elderly gentlemen and young twin sisters, Mexican Americans, who have escaped from a Mexican drug baron," writes the 90-year-old retired Methodist minister.

'54 Sparrow Records founder Billy Ray Hearn, BM '54, a past member of the Baylor Board of Regents, will be honored along with his son Bill, president and CEO of Capitol Christian Music Group, at the 2015 T.J. Martell Foundation Honors Gala. Billy Ray Hearn has produced or executive produced more than 2 million-selling and Grammy Award-winning projects. A member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Hearn is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gospel Music Association and the 2008 Award for Exemplary Leadership in Church Music, given by Baylor’s Center for Christian Music Studies.
Roger Rector, BBA '54, of Houston, has released BRIG, an action novel that deals with politics, drugs, religion, racism, border security and immigration. William S. Sessions, BA '56, JD '58, has been awarded the Morris I. Leibman Award in Law and National Security from the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security. The award recognizes lawyers who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to and made exceptional contributions to the field of law and national security. Sessions is a partner at Holland & Knight law firm and the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. district judge and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas.

Gil A. Stricklin, BA '57, of Dallas, is founder, chairman and CEO of Marketplace Ministries Inc., the parent organization for five organizational subsidiaries, including Marketplace Chaplains. Marketplace Chaplains celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2014. Marketplace Chaplains has nearly 3,000 chaplains working in 35 different industries, caring for more than 564,000 client company employees in seven countries. Stricklin has published a history of the organization in a new book, Chaplain (MMI Publishing, 2014, 231 pages).

Reita Rea Hawthorne, BA '58, of Waco, has recorded the book, You Can’t Do it Alone: The Inspiration of Coach Bill Lane (Reita Ray Hawthorne, 2014: 128 pages). The story documents Lane's life, including his overcoming of a serious stuttering problem to become an outstanding coach and recruiter. The book is illustrated by Carilyn (Canon) Baker, BA '58, of Chantilly, VA, and includes a foreword by Grant Teaff, with whom Lane coached at Baylor for 21 years. The book is available at the Baylor Bookstore. Hawthorne has also put together her 4th Annual Christian Writer's Workshop at First Baptist Church Woodway, which began Jan. 24 and runs through April 1. Karl P. Mattlage, BBA '64, JD '65, has opened a law practice in Sheridan, WY. He is admitted to practice law in Texas, Colorado and Wyoming. His past positions include being a partner with the Denver law firm of Hall & Evans and manager of its branch office in Steamboat Springs, CO. Mattlage served two terms as commissioner of the Colorado Department of Transportation and was instrumental in the design, funding and construction of the Edwin C. Johnson bore of the Eisenhower Tunnel and the Glenwood Canyon corridor of I-70. He served as a major in the U.S. Air Force and recently served as a seasonal interpretive park ranger at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. Dr. L. Ralph Rohr, BA ’64, has recently published two books, including The Revelation of Jesus Christ: Comfort or Confusion? (Westbow Press, 2014: 488 pages). Rohr has researched and facilitated Bible studies for many years. The book grew out of a class he led. In it, Rohr reviews the symbolic images of Revelation in their biblical context. Col. Ed Dyer, BA '66, of Katy, TX, was the keynote speaker during the Veterans Day Celebration at Spring Forest Middle School in Houston. Over his 32-year career in the U.S. Army, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Bronze Stars, five Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and two Purple Heart medals. He ended his military career as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
Dr. Raymond Teske Jr., BA '66, MA '70, of Huntsville, TX, helped celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Huntsville SAAFE House (family violence shelter and sexual assault program) in October. He was recognized as one of the founding members of the SAAFE House in 1984. He is pictured with his wife Jane (Mulsow) Teske (Alumna By Choice) and their grandson Aaron James Teske, born Aug. 21, 2014, to John and Jennifer Teske. Dr. Teske's father, Raymond Teske Sr., BA '71, passed away in 2005 at age 88. Dr. Teske writes, "Before he died, I asked him where he wanted to go and he replied the Baylor campus. We drove around and he was pointing to buildings and telling me he took history from professor X in that building and geology from professor Y in that building. It was a wonderful day and his last day to take a ride outside St. Catherine's. Dad took me to my first Baylor football game on 15th Street at the Muni Stadium, before Floyd Casey was built. All those years he took me to games and, as a Boy Scout, I ushered at all home games. The family was sitting together in what was then Section CC with Raymond III, BA '96, who was a year old in 1974 when Baylor defeated Texas. My mother Marjorie, also a Baylor ABC, passed away four years ago. In Dad's wallet we found a small card from the game in 1974 that he had carried in his wallet until the day he passed away. Now, I hope I can get tickets for the Homecoming game in 2016 and my 50th graduation celebration."

Tom McBride, BA '67, of Janesville, WI, and coauthor Ron Neif, have published The Mindset List of the Obscure: 74 Famously Forgotten Icons from A to Z (Sourcebooks 2014: 320 pages). The authors highlight historical pop culture luminaries, legacies, objects, and institutions with some parallels to contemporary life. McBride is emeritus English professor of Beloit Collge, where he taught Shakespeare for 41 years. The former public radio commentator is a frequent speaker around the country.

Louis A. Moore Jr., '68, and his wife, Kay Wheeler Moore, BA '71, saved a late 1800s historic home from demolition. On Oct. 15, the Moores moved the Historic Pace House to a vacant lot adjacent to their home in Garland, TX. This followed months of negotiations that saw the house's plight featured in numerous publications, including This Old House magazine. The Moores, selected over 400 other applicants to take ownership of the house, have been active in historic preservation in Garland and Dallas. Louis serves as the chair of the Garland mayor's task force on historical preservation. He is also a trustee for Dallas Heritage Village situated in Old City Park in downtown Dallas. He is in his seventh year on Garland's Plan Commission. Louis and Kay are members of Garland's Landmark Society and Preservation Garland. The arrival of the Pace House in the Moores' neighborhood is the capstone of a major renewal effort underway since May 2013.

In 1989, Lonnie Longmire, BBA '70, of Kerrville, TX, began organizing reunions for the Alpha Kappa Psi men's fraternity from the classes of 1967-72. A 1993 reunion featured a rematch of the 1968 intramural football championship between AKPsi and Tri-C. Gatherings exceeded 200 in 1996 and 1998. The group has continued to "relive the glory years" each year since 2010, when Don Heathcott, BBA '70, took over organizing the reunions. This year’s two-day event took place on Homecoming weekend and included a charity golf tournament benefitting Baylor Women’s Golf and a gathering at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Joel Allison, BA '70, has been selected as D Magazine's 2014 Dallas-Fort Worth CEO of the Year in the CEO Sentiment Survey, conducted annually by SMU’s Cox School of Business. Allison is the CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest nonprofit health system in the state with 49 hospitals, more than 500 patient care sites, approximately 6,000 affiliated physicians, and 35,000 employees. Allison also serves on the Baylor University Board of Regents.
Richard Veit, BA '70, MA '80, of Robinson, TX, concert and promotions manager in the Baylor School of Music, has authored Home Sweet Home Front, (Wingspan Press, 2013: 700 pages) a nostalgic, coming-of-age historical novel about a teenage boy in Waco during World War II.

Mike McGilvray, BSEd '72, was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. His career in education started in Waco ISD where he was head baseball coach at Richfield High School and Waco High School. He met his wife, Christy, BSEd '74, MSEd '78, while teaching and coaching in Waco. In 1988, they made a move to Grand Prairie ISD. While at Grand Prairie High School, he coached Marty Crawford, BSEd '96, who is a member of the Baylor Hall of Fame. McGilvray was hired by Conroe ISD in 1996 as the head baseball coach at McCullough/The Woodlands HS. His team won the 5A UIL State Championship in 2000. McGilvray continued his coaching career at Lamar High School (Houston ISD) from 2005 - 2011. In retirement, he is working at The Woodlands College Park High School as an assistant baseball coach. Marvin W. "Marty" Jones, BA '73, JD '77, has been elected chairman of the Board of Disciplinary Appeals. The Board is a statewide independent adjudicatory body of 12 attorneys appointed by the Supreme Court of Texas to hear certain attorney discipline cases and to promote consistency in interpretation and application of the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct and the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Procedure. Jones is the managing partner of the Sprouse Shrader Smith law firm in its Amarillo office.

Christy (Whitsitt) McGilvray, BSEd '74, MSEd '78, retired in June 2014 after 39 years in education. She began her teaching career in Waco ISD where she met her husband, Mike McGilvray, BSEd '72. A move to Grand Prairie ISD transitioned Christy from the classroom into counseling. In 1996, the McGilvrays moved to The Woodlands (Conroe ISD) where Christy finished out her career as a high school counselor. Christy now works part time for Herff Jones. Dr. John Kernan, MSEd '75, had an article published in the Track Coach journal, spring issue #207. The article, which was about using track and field running techniques as a warm up to math instruction for his special education students, was titled, "Putting SPARK to the Test: Getting Fit 4 Math!" With experience coaching at several places, including Baylor and BYU, Kernan is now the director of special education at John Hancock Charter School in Pleasant Grove, UT. He currently teaches special education, publishes, does research, and coaches several local athletes in preparation for the Paralympic Games, U.S. National Championships, and other events.
Dr. Rick Simpson, BA '75, MTax '83, of Hammond, LA, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Accounting Education Award by the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants. He is an associate professor in the Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Accounting and Finance. Simpson previously taught at the University of Houston and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Rod Aydelotte, BA '77, was named the 2014 distinguished Alumnus at The McLennan Community College Foundation’s Highlander Alumni & Friends Association. Aydelotte graduated from McLennan Community College in 1974 before attending Baylor to pursue a bachelor's degree in photography and journalism. He currently serves as the chief photographer for the Waco Tribune-Herald. He has been frequently recognized for his accomplishments, ranging from Associated Press Managing Editors awards to a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
John Kramp, BA '77, has been appointed senior vice president of the Bible Group at HarperCollins Christian Publishing in Nashville. Kramp will oversee the Bible publishing and study resources business for Thomas Nelson and Zondervan books. For 19 years he worked for LifeWay Christian Resources, most recently as vice president of the Church Resources Division. He started a consulting firm in 2011. Kramp holds a MBA from Northwestern University and a master of divinity from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has written several published books and recorded music.

Elizabeth Darling, BS '78, of Austin, has been named to The NonProfit Times 2014 Power & Influence Top 50 in recognition of her leadership at the state and federal levels across both government and the nonprofit sectors. She has worked for three governors and for President G.W. Bush as the first director of the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2001-02. The University Libraries recently added a book to The Texas Collection in memory of her father, Ralph Darling, director of the physical plant and resident engineer from 1970-86. Ralph donated volumes of his personal collection to the university as Baylor sought accreditation of their engineering program. Mark Hurd, BBA '79, was named CEO of Oracle after serving as president since 2010. He is also a member of the company's Board of Directors. Hurd has more than 30 years of technology industry leadership, computer hardware expertise, and executive management experience to his role with the company, including experience as chairman of the Board, CEO, and president of HP, and CEO and president at NCR Corporation. He is also a member of the Baylor University Board of Regents.
Copperas Cove (TX) ISD principals Mary Derrick, BSEd '79, Marla Sullivan, BMEd '90, and Kayleen Love, MSEd '99, were recognized by state, city, and chamber officials for their efforts in pursuit of excellence in education as part of National Principals Month in October. Derrick, principal of Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy, is beginning her 34th year in education, 31 of those years in Cove ISD. Sullivan has worked in public education for 25 years. She is principal of Williams/Ledger Elementary School. Love is in her sixth year as principal of S.C. Lee Junior High and her 21st in Cove ISD.

The Sharyland ISD Rattler Stadium in Mission, TX, was renamed the Richard Thompson Stadium in honor of Richard Thompson, BSEd '80, of Mission. Thompson has been part of Sharyland ISD for 35 years as a coach and athletic director. Family, friends and colleagues gathered on Aug. 21 for the dedication ceremony, during which a letter from Baylor President Ken Starr was read, congratulating Thompson. He was also named the 2013 Region VII Athletic Administrator of the Year for the state of Texas. Patty Manning, BFA '84, of Alpine, TX, was honored for her "amazing botanical contributions" as one of the state's most intrepid field botanists at the Texas Plant Conservation Conference in November in Austin. She retired as greenhouse manager at Sul Ross State University in May after more than 17 years. Manning now does contract botany fieldwork as a subcontractor for the Wildflower Center as well as collecting data and mapping vegetation in Big Bend National Park for the National Park System.

Barron-DiCamillo is a recipient of the Commerce Department's Bronze Medal Award for Superior Federal Service.
Lindale (TX) ISD and EJ Moss Intermediate School teacher Whitney Crews, BA '96, has been named as Region 7 ESC's 2015 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Crews has been recognized by her community and school district for numerous achievements throughout her 18-year teaching career and has a long list of leadership activities within her department, school and district. She is a four-time recipient of Lindale ISD Education Foundation’s teaching grants and a two-time recipient of the district’s Teacher of the Month award.

Drayton McLane III, BBA '96, of Salado, TX, was elected to the board of directors of Central National Bank and its holding company, CentraBanc Corp. He is executive vice president of McLane Group and several subsidiary firms. McLane III is CEO of Classic Foods, a Fort Worth kettle-cook company that specializes in food products for stadiums, restaurants and convenience stores. He is chairman of Sports in Action, managing and operating the Dave Campbell's Texas Football brand, the AT&T Red River Shootout and the University Interscholastic League. McLane III is a board member for the Temple Economic Development Corp., the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Baylor Scott & White Central Texas. Dr. Richard Pineda, BA '96, has been awarded the 2014 Córdova-Puchot Scholar of the Year Award from the Latina/o Communication Studies Division/La Raza Caucus of The National Communication Association. Pineda is the director of the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies and associate professor of communication at University of Texas-El Paso. He holds a PhD from Wayne State University and an MA from UTEP.
David Saulnier, MBA '96, has been appointed as chief risk officer of State Street Global Advisors, an asset management company. He previously served as chief risk officer for State Street’s investment servicing business in the Americas. Saulnier joined State Street in 2008 from Pioneer Investment Management USA, where for seven years he was director and head of risk management for all U.S. operations, trading and portfolio management.

Brothers John, '00, and Joel Peel, BBA '00, are renovating a historic downtown Waco building at 1125 Washington Ave. into a home for their two businesses. John started Sticker Universe in his freshman dorm room at Baylor in 1994 and now has 60 licensing agreements and is the biggest producer of Baylor stickers. Joel Peel has 22 employees at Hole in the Roof, which designs and makes promotional apparel and does print and Web promotions.

Zack Andrews (Zack Wimpee), BA '01, of Hollywood, CA, wrote, produced and starred in The Houses October Built, which opened in October. This was the Plano, TX, native's first major screen appearance. Andrews also spends a lot of time within the autism community, whether speaking engagements, assisting in plays, or spending time with kids he has known for many years.
Andrew Welch, MHA '01, is the new director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care system in New Mexico. Welch will be coming from Amarillo, where he led that VA system for six years. He will be responsible for the overall management of a tertiary medical care facility in Albuquerque and 11 outpatient clinics. Those clinics provide primary care and mental health services to veterans throughout New Mexico and southern Colorado.
Matthew Polk, BA '01, MA '02, superintendent of Waco's Rapoport Academy, is now executive director of Prosper Waco, a new nonprofit group that will coordinate community efforts to improve health care, education and income. Polk holds a doctorate in history from Harvard University. He became a Rapoport administrator in 2008 and superintendent in 2011. During his time there, the charter school has doubled its enrollment and expanded to new buildings.

Marlon Funez, MDiv '04, of Colorado Springs, CO, has been awarded the 2014 Colorado NBCC Foundation Minority Scholarship from the NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors. He is enrolled in a qualifying masters-level counseling program in the state of Colorado. He has worked with underserved populations since 1998 and is currently a school counselor intern at Manual High School in Denver, CO.
Women in Film Dallas honored Allison Tolman, BFA '04, with a Topaz Award on Nov. 22. Tolman is a 2014 Emmy nominee and Critics' Choice Award winner for her work on the FX series, Fargo. After graduating from Baylor, she moved to Dallas, where she co-founded Second Thought Theatre. In 2009, she was accepted into Chicago's Second City's Conservatory Training Program. Before her work on Fargo, Tolman wrote and performed sketch comedy and satire with several groups in the Chicago area.

David Argueta, BS '05, MBA '05, is now president of CHI St. Luke's Health The Woodlands (TX) Hospital, Lakeside Hospital, and the Springwoods Village facility. Argueta played an integral role in managing these facilities, and was initially named chief operating officer for The Woodlands Hospital, then assuming the interim president role in July. He previously served as operations administrator for physician services and vice president of operations at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest in Waco.

Soprano Kiri Deonarine, BMEd '07, will sing in New York's Metropolitan Opera as Frasquita in this season's performance of Carmen, which runs from Feb. 6 to March 7. The New Jersey native studied at the Dresden Institute for Advanced Studies before pursuing a master's in vocal performance at Indiana University. She apprenticed as a young artist at Santa Fe Opera, Houston and Chicago, placed second in the 2014 Loren L. Zachary Competition and won first prize in the 2013 Giulio Gari Competition.

Will Bakke, BA '11, wrote and directed Believe Me, a new faith film about four college seniors who start a fake charity to embezzle money for tuition. The movie debuted in theaters in September. This is Bakke's first time as a feature film director after the documentaries One Nation Under God and Beware of Christians that he started while at Baylor. Believe Me features Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Alex Russell (2013's Carrie), Sinqua Walls (Friday Night Lights) and Christian rapper Lecrae in the cast.
Kelsey Leigh Ervi, BFA '11, directed The Santaland Diaries in December at the WaterTower Theatre in Dallas, one of the top regional theatres in the country. Ervi has directed or assisted on several productions and currently serves as artistic and marketing associate for WaterTower Theatre.

Emily Hood, BSEd '14, and Josh Hansen, a Baylor senior studying nonprofit marketing, launched their nonprofit, Abba's Children International, in September. The organization will allow donors to sponsor individual children and facility improvement projects at All Nation's Charity Home in Kumasi, Ghana. Hood said she and Hansen came up with the idea for sponsorship while volunteering at the orphanage during the summer of 2013. Since completing her first year of college, Hood has visited Ghana every summer with a team from Baylor. Hood is a graduate student in Baylor’s School of Social Work.
