Tiffany Hsu, BS '08, is in her eighth year as an MD/PhD student at Baylor College of Medicine. She writes, "I defended my PhD in the Integrative Molecular and Biomedical Sciences Program, and my paper, 'The spliceosome is a therapeutic vulnerability in MYC-driven cancer,' is being published in Nature. The MYC oncogene drives almost 30 percent of all human cancers and accounts for some of the deadliest ones. We discovered that MYC-driven cancers depend on a molecular machine called the spliceosome to survive. Because this dependency is specific to MYC, inhibition of the spliceosome using a small molecule kills cancer cells but leaves noncancerous tissues unaffected in mouse models. This study is an important and promising step toward helping patients." Contact at thsu@bcm.edu.
