Bear Foundation sets membership, fundraising goals

December 30, 2015

For the first time in its history, the Baylor Bear Foundation (BBF) has achieved a total of more than 5,000 members, and the organization is projected to set a record in annual fundraising of approximately $14 million to support student-athlete scholarships and other athletics programs.

Seven months into the 2014-15 fiscal year, which will end May 31, the Bear Foundation exceeded its annual membership goal. With its successful start to the fiscal year, the BBF is projected to raise approximately $14 million in scholarship support for Baylor's student-athletes, an amount that is nearly double the total raised in the 2012-13 fiscal year. This success caps off a season that saw the Baylor football team win its second consecutive Big 12 championship, this time in its new home at McLane Stadium. Boosted by this success, the BBF's membership has grown 15 percent from last year and an incredible 52 percent from the 2012-13 fiscal year. Membership is expected to continue to grow, buoyed by the ongoing remarkable success of Baylor athletics.

"Baylor's student-athletes have enjoyed extraordinary success both on the field and in the classroom," said Doug McNamee, associate athletic director for development. "Simultaneously, the Bear Foundation has continued to post record-breaking years, both in memberships and annual giving totals. We are thankful to the 5,000-plus members who are helping provide the financial support necessary to make a top-quality Baylor education possible for our outstanding student-athletes."

Originally known as the Baylor Bear Club, the Baylor Bear Foundation was established more than 70 years ago with the mission of assisting student-athletes and furthering Baylor athletics' success. In addition to providing scholarships for student-athletes, members are able to make gifts to Excellence Funds that directly support any of Baylor's 19 varsity sports programs.

"The Baylor Bear Foundation is a truly irreplaceable source of financial support for Baylor athletics, enabling our student-athletes to fulfill their potential, both in academics and athletics, and reach for ever-higher aspirations," said Ian McCaw, vice president and director of athletics at Baylor. "The Bear Foundation plays an essential role in facilitating Baylor Nation’s support of our student-athletes by securing the resources they need to be competitive and providing an exceptional fan experience."

With growth expected to continue, McNamee said he is hopeful the BBF will be able to attain its goal of annually funding all student-athlete scholarships within the next two years.
