Nursing School gala raises money for scholarships

The third annual Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) “Going for the Gold Gala” in May at the Omni Dallas Hotel raised more than $750,000 to support scholarships for students. The gala continues the tradition of spotlighting championship efforts to raise scholarship funds for student nurses.

“Regardless of background, education and experience, everyone at some point in their life needs a competent and caring nurse,” said Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, CNE, current dean of LHSON and inaugural dean of the new Baylor College of Health and Human Sciences. “Our students are drawn to a calling to learn, lead and serve, and we want to be able to help them attend our nursing school, knowing that for many of them, paying for their education is beyond their families’ abilities.”

The 2014 spring gala featured Mary Lou Retton, America’s gold medal legend. The first American woman to receive an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, Retton also was the first American to win the Olympic All-Around title.

“We are thrilled Mary Lou Retton was our speaker,” said Janis Kovar, LHSON’s director of development. “She’s an incredible example of dedication to a goal, with an added bonus that her daughter attends Baylor.”
