Geraldine Stanberry Hitchcock, BA '35, of Hosston, La., died June 10 at age 97. An author, historian, teacher and longtime Shreveport resident, Hitchcock was also an ardent Baylor supporter.

Edwin Earl Teal, BA '35, passed away June 20 at age 98. After Baylor, he furthered his education at Brown University on a Marston Scholarship, then at the University of Michigan where he received his master's degree in physics. He did early research in acoustics during World War II as a research physicist for the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory. Afterward, he worked in oil well logging research and development, patenting his idea on the use of frontal analysis chromatography in well logging. Teal was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Ruby Brown Teal, BBS '35, who passed away Jan. 16, 2011. She taught at Calvert [Texas] High School before raising a family.

Vonnabeth Harrell Rogers, BA '36, of San Antonio, passed away Jan. 25. She was 97. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Will C. Rogers, BS '34. She is survived by her two sons, Capt. Will C. Rogers III, USN (retired), BA '62, and Richard H. Rogers.

Mary Beth Wiese McElroy Holt, BA '39, of Baytown, Texas, died June 1 at age 93. She was a teacher for many years, including at Robert E. Lee High School and Goose Creek until retiring in 1981.

Billie Warren Terry, BA '39, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away June 24 at age 93. She was a member of River Oaks Baptist Church for 50 years. Among her survivors is her husband of 66 years, Ben Terry, JD '40.

Edith "Jac" Daniel McCarty, BA '40, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away July 9 at age 93. An active member of First Baptist Church for 53 years, she was predeceased by husband Robert Curtis "Mac" McCarty, JD '52.

Norman S. Evans, BA '41, died June 14 in Laguna Hills, Calif. He was 91. Evans served several stints in the U.S. Navy from 1942-80, retiring as a lieutenant commander. He worked for many years with the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California horse racing industry.

Ruth Murrell Herring, BA '41, of Malvern, Pa., died May 28 at age 85. She was a librarian at Highland Baptist Church in Waco for 30 years and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Floris Williams Goodwin Tarpley, BBA '41, of Garland, Texas, died June 9 at age 91.

Milton R. Mickey Lane, '42, of Rosenberg, Texas, died May 29 at age 90. His wife of 68 years, Myrtis Stringfellow Lane, AB '42, died July 5. She was 91. A Marine Corps pilot, Mr. Lane built Lane Airpark with his brother in Rosenberg. A corporate pilot for 62 years, he also ran Lane's Trading Corner for many years. The Lanes were very active volunteers in Rosenberg for decades.

William M. Newman Jr., BBA '42, of Dallas, died June 7 at age 91. After serving in the Army, he joined the family printing business and held numerous national leadership positions in the industry. He was married to the late Bobbie Jean Shields, BA '43, for 66 years.

Leslye Martin Barouch, BA '43, of Bellevue, Wash., died May 15 at age 89. She was married to Army Air Corps pilot Lt. Robert Barouch for 62 years. They had two children.

Audrey Vernor Free, BA '43, of Falls Church, Va., died May 27. Retiring in 1989 from George Washington Law School as the executive assistant to the dean, Free was active in numerous organizations, including organizing a knitters club that has made and donated more than 1,000 sweaters.

Joy Ray Macanliss, BA '43, formerly of Houston, passed away Jan. 23 in Marlin, Texas. She was 88. She was an active Baylor alumna and a big fan of Lady Bear basketball. Macanliss was married to the late Marshall (Dugan) Macanliss, BS '43, DDS '46, for 68 years.

Edith Reidland Grantham, BBA '44, of Dayton, Texas, died May 19 at age 88. She taught business at Baylor and earned a master's degree at Sam Houston State University. Grantham taught high school English and business for many years before serving as a missionary in Japan, teaching English and Bible studies there at a girls' junior college.

Calloway Seale Crews, BA '49, a longtime Kyle and Austin, Texas, resident, died June 6 at age 88. He served in the invasion of Okinawa and in China with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He played on Baylor's football team in 1947, later becoming a teacher and football coach in Clifton, Karnes City and Round Rock.

Raymond E. Emery, BBA '49, of Bay City, Texas, died May 26. He was 94. Emery served in the Navy during World War II and later in the Navy Reserve. The state badminton champion in 1939 and 1940, he worked for many years for Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation in Shreveport and then Houston.

Hal J. Harris Sr., BBA '49, of Austin, died May 27 at age 83. He met and married his wife of 62 years, Pat George, BA '50, while at Baylor. A longtime deacon and Sunday School director at Hyde Park Baptist Church, Harris spent most of his career in insurance. He served on the board of directors of the Texas Baptist Children's Home and Children at Heart Ministries. Harris served in the U.S. Navy, and his sons, Hal Jr., BBA '78, Scott, BA '80, and Andy, BBA '84, are Baylor alumni.

Billy Joe Norris, BBA '49, of Arlington, Texas, passed away June 8 at age 86. The youngest of 10 children, he served in World War II and married his wife of 68 years, Peggy O'Brien, with whom he had two children. After the war, Norris played football for Baylor and eventually worked for A.G. Spalding for 25 years.

Hon. Ted Butler, JD '50, of San Antonio, died June 4 at age 84. The retired district judge had a long and distinguished legal and political career. He was a county attorney and judge before becoming U.S. district attorney and judge. Butler also was a rancher and U.S. Army veteran. Among his survivors are children Richard M. Butler, BA '76, JD '77, Melinda Butler Beckett, BA '73, MA '78, and Julie Butler Beck, BSEd '77.

James Walter Lyons, BA '50, of Catlettsburg, Ky., died June 17. He was 91.

Mary Joe Edwards Godwin-Zenor, BM '51, of Chandler, Ariz., died May 17 at age 82. She was an accomplished singer and pianist.

Shirley Ward Hansen, '51, died June 18 in Snellville, Ga. She was 81. A child prodigy pianist, she later performed for years at the Midland [Texas] Community Theatre and played in several bands in Midland and Lubbock, including Shirley and Friends. Hansen was also an avid golfer.

Ernest (Bud) Horton Jr., MA '51, a longtime Arlington, Texas, resident, died June 10 at age 90. A Yale graduate, he served in the Navy and worked in engineering at Chance Vaught in Grand Prairie and General Dynamics in Fort Worth, retiring in 1986.

Ret. USAF Major Marion S. Webb Jr., BA '51, of Houston, died March 20. He was a retired fighter pilot, earning many medals and the Silver Star with oak leaf clusters. The Navy and Air Force veteran served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Later he was a safety engineer and was active in Houston's First Baptist Church. His survivors include his wife, Peggy.

Lola Fay "Corky" Ball Altenburg, BBA '52, of Wharton, Texas, died June 13 at age 82. While a Baylor student, she was drum major of the Golden Girls Baylorettes. Altenburg worked as a teacher, dress shop owner and realtor. She was married to Waymond Altenburg for 61 years.

Dr. Dwain M. Hart, BS '52, MS '52, EdD '62, of Abilene, Texas, died July 5 at age 80. After 56 years, Hart retired from Abilene Christian University in 2011. There he served as the first chair of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department; tennis coach; dean of the College of Professional Studies; dean of the Graduate School; vice president of academic affairs; provost; provost emeritus and the liaison to the National Christian Schools Association. Hart served as an elder at Hillcrest Church of Christ as well as on several local, state and national boards. He was instrumental in developing the physical education program at the Abilene State School and in bringing the Special Olympics to Texas. He was married for 58 years to Bettie McKnight Hart, MS '52.

Earle A. Paxson, BA '52, MS '53, of Ormond Beach, Fla., died May 21 at age 94. He served in the U.S. Army in hospital administration from 1940-70.

Jack McDonald Carson, BA '53, of Henderson, Ky., died May 28. He was 81. A Baptist minister for 10 years, he transitioned to a career with Job Corps in California and later Morganfield, Ky. He also was a board member for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.

Rev. Samuel Blake Dunagan, BA '54, of Tyler, Texas, died June 22 at age 81. In his ministry career spanning 45 years, Dunagan pastored 10 churches in Texas, including Second Baptist in Dallas, King Memorial Baptist in McKinney, and First Baptist Churches in Como, DeKalb and Clarksville. After retirement, he served as interim pastor in 11 churches.

Frederick E. Kallof, JD '54, of Phoenix, passed away April 23 at age 84. He married Billie Ader, MS '51, in 1955. They had three children. Kallof served two years in the Navy and practiced law for more than 50 years in Phoenix.

Jack P. Sisco, BBA '54, of Corsicana, Texas, died June 27 at age 80. He was a graduate and Hall of Fame inductee of both Weatherford High School and Baylor. Sisco was a collegiate football All-American and All-Southwest Conference center for Baylor and played in the 1952 Orange Bowl. He served as an Air Force captain during the Korean War before beginning a 33-year career with Dallas ISD as a teacher and principal at several elementary schools in the East Dallas area.

Leroy Nelson Tucker, BBA '54, of Waco, died June 16. He was 91. A World War II veteran, Tucker was an employee in the U.S. Civil Service, including time with the Veterans Administration, James Connally Air Force Base and Fort Hood Army Base.

H. Wallace Wright, BBA '54, of Waco, died June 8 at age 82. Wright had multiple career paths, including art, residential construction, and meatpacking. He built numerous apartment complexes in Waco and was founder and co-owner of Waco Beef & Pork Processors.

William (Bill) H. Lucky Jr., BS '55, passed away Jan. 9 in Rosenberg, Texas. He was 80. Lucky played football at Baylor and was on the 1952 Orange Bowl team. He received a master's degree from Prairie View A&M. For many years, he was a coach and teacher in Texas schools, and he spent the last 23 years of his career as director of maintenance for Lamar CISD, retiring in 1999. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Fred G. Britton, BS '57, of Grapevine, Texas, died June 19. He was 82. After Air Force tours in Korea and Japan, Britton enrolled at Baylor and was on the 1956 Sugar Bowl champion team. He later coached the Baylor freshman football team before he became vice president of Oil States Industries, a leader in offshore drilling equipment. After retirement in 1985, he owned several racehorses with former Baylor teammate Charlie Bradshaw. He was a loyal supporter of Baylor and many other causes.

Dr. Billy Gene Davenport, BA '57, of Kerrville, Texas, died June 14 at age 82. He earned degrees from Texas State and North Texas. A licensed counselor, therapist and diagnostician, Davenport taught special education classes in San Antonio and Kerrville. Among his survivors is his wife, Ann Grant Davenport, '56.

Dr. Ed Hood Franklin, BA '57, of Waco, passed away on May 23. He was 76. A high school all-American and member of the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame, Franklin played at Baylor before entering dental school. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was active in supporting education, and was director on the Board of the Baylor Stadium Corporation. A faithful Bears fan, Franklin served 18 years as a volunteer dentist one day a week at the Waco-McLennan Dental Clinic. Memorials may be made to the Baylor "B" Association.

Bobbye Louise Furse, BBA '57, of Waco, died June 28 at age 76.

John Ralph "Riff Jr." Killgore Jr., BA '57, of Rosebud, Texas, died May 23 at age 82. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was the owner, publisher and editor of the Rosebud News for many years. He also served as justice of the peace for 24 years.

Dean Allen Edmonds, BBA '58, of Spring, Texas, died June 19. He was 75. Edmonds, formerly of Oyster Creek, Texas, served in the U.S. Navy and retired as assistant treasurer from North Central Oil Corporation. Memorials may be made to the new Baylor Stadium.

Donald Gettys Morgan, BBA '58, of Ashland, Va., passed away July 10 at age 77. He served in the U.S. Army and later was a banker and salesman. Among his survivors is his wife of 48 years, Jeanette Morgan.

Barbara Ann Eskew Fisher, BS '59, of Powell, Wyo., died May 13 at age 82. She was a physical education teacher and later was a professional entertainer.

Carolyn Pentecost Tucker, BA '59, passed away July 26 in Alpharetta, Ga. She was 74. As an Air Force wife and mother of three sons, she moved with her family across the U.S. and overseas to Iceland, Holland and Saudi Arabia. During the Gulf War in 1990-91, she served as administrative assistant to the chief, U.S. Military Mission to Saudi Arabia and was awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal by General Norman Schwartzkopf. Military decorations are very seldom awarded to civilians.

Hon. Larry Weldon Starr, JD '60, died June 20 in Tyler, Texas. Starr was valedictorian of his Elkhart High School class and graduated from the University of Louisville. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-57 before attending Baylor Law. Starr practiced law in Houston and Longview and was also a county, district and appellate court justice. Among Starr's survivors are his wife of 48 years, Nancy Ogletree Starr, BS '61, and daughters Sarah Rutherford Starr, BA '88, MA '90, and Jennifer Starr McCumber, BA '90, JD '93. John Riley Wensley, BS '60, passed away May 27 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was 74. After serving in the Navy, he became an oil and gas mud engineer, living and working in Europe, Africa, South America and the U.S. For the past five years, he lived in Sherman, Texas.

Dr. William Emory Elmore II, MA '63, of Madisonville, La., passed away May 20 at age 75. He was Professor Emeritus at College of the Ozarks near Branson, Mo. An instructor of philosophy and religion, Elmore held degrees from the University of Virginia, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Baylor, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. Among his survivors is his wife of 50 years, Jean Elmore, BA '64.

Elizabeth Hunt Harrington, '63, of Dallas, passed away June 7 at age 70. She was a music teacher and active in numerous organizations, including the Dallas Woman's Club and the Dallas Garden Club.

Frances Gale Dalton, MSEd '64, of Belton, Texas, died May 31 at age 100. Also a graduate of William and Mary University, she taught Latin and English at Belton High School and was a Sunday School teacher from age 11 to 93.

Carl Henry Vick, BS '64, of Meridian, Texas, died June 10. He was 86. He served in the Navy on submarine duty during World War II. He coached high school football in central Texas from 1955-74, when he became employed by the state to help organize special education initiatives. He retired from teaching in 2000.

Sarah (Sally) Phillips Denton, BA '65, of Austin, died June 24 at age 69. A graduate of UT law school, she served as presiding judge of the Austin Municipal Court and worked a number of other legal jobs.

Roy Lee Mosley, BBA '67, of Montgomery, Texas, died May 20. He was 67. Mosley led music and worked with youth in his church. He spent the last 17 years working for Allenko Finishes, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Minnie, five children and seven grandchildren.

David William Johnson, BA '69, JD '71, of Houston, passed away May 24 at age 67. A Vietnam veteran, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Boston and then Houston until his retirement in 1977. While in Boston, he earned a degree from Boston University and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. His name appears on more than 80 published tax court opinions. Among his survivors is his wife, Becky Ratliff Johnson, BFA '70.

Truman Lenze Walker, BA '72, of Helena, Mont., died June 8 at age 62. He worked as a chemist for Mary Kay Cosmetics, started a silk screening company and worked for the Department of Transportation in Helena.

Cynthia Pine Connell, BS '73, of McGregor, Texas, died June 27. She was 60. Connell worked as a licensed physical therapist for more than 30 years. Among her survivors are husband Michael, three children and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Baylor Bear Foundation.

Robert Jack Redding, BA '74, died May 19 in Tulsa, Okla. He was 66. Redding served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. A longtime Waco resident, he raised many champion racing greyhounds on his dog farm.

Nellie Friel Franklin, MS '75, of Waco, passed away July 7 at age 90. She assisted her late husband, Dr. Thomas Franklin, in Baylor's chemistry department for more than 40 years. She later taught chemistry at Baylor as well. She was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church.

Jeanetta Joy Carver, BA '78, of Waco, writes, "My husband, David Lane Carver (first class of Alumni by Choice) and lifelong supporter of Baylor Athletics, died Dec. 17, 2011. He missed the whole awesome season and was unaware that his Bears were on top of the world. He was dressed in his game gear, holding the front page of the paper with RG3's picture and had a green and gold spray with a Baylor helmet for the funeral. David would never leave a game until everyone sang 'That Good Old Baylor Line.' At the end of his service, we sang the song and did 'Sic 'em Bears.' His monument has a gorgeous bear on it and says 'Sic 'em Bears.'"

John Gregory Glass, BS '79, MA '87, of Coudy, Okla., passed away Feb. 22 at age 60. He was a police officer and probation officer in the Waco area for a total of 28 years. An avid musician and singer, Glass played the tuba at Baylor and sang with the Baylor Singing Seniors. He performed in many churches over the years. Glass is survived by his wife, Joan Armstrong Glass, BS '82, MS '87.

E. Duncan Manning, BA '80, of Benbrook, Texas, passed away July 2 at age 59. As a college student, Manning was a bear trainer for Baylor Chamber. He worked in health care development and fundraising, serving most recently as vice president of development at James L. West Center in Fort Worth; he previously worked in Waco, San Angelo and Longview.

Stephanie White Morrel, BMEd '80, of Irving, Texas, passed away Aug. 7, 2011. She was 53. Morrel taught mathematics at Lamar Middle School in Irving for 17 years.

Paul Mendoza, BA '93, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., died June 8. He was 42. Mendoza was a supermarket manager and was very active in YMCA programs. Among his survivors is his wife, Melissa Campos Mendoza, BA '93.

Peter Winchell, BS '11, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 11. He was 22. Winchell studied ecology at Baylor and was a U.S. Navy recruit at the time of his death. He was living in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Eric Hercules Geotas, MBA '12, of Austin, died June 23 from a heart attack. He was 46. A graduate of George Washington University, Geotas was a senior program manager at Pearson Assessments.

Baylor senior Matthew R. (Matt) Clark passed away June 3 from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Waco. Clark was a health science studies major on a pre-med/pre-dental track from Frisco, Texas.

Inya Eleje, a senior psychology major from El Paso, passed away suddenly on Aug. 8. He was 21. Eleje was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Waco native Gordon Cowden, of Aurora, Colo., died July 20, in a shooting rampage in the theater where he and his two teenage daughters were watching the midnight opening of the movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Cowden, whose children were not hurt, was 51, the oldest victim of the rampage that left 12 dead and 58 injured. Cowden attended Baylor and then transferred to Howard Payne University, from which he graduated in 1983. Cowden was the son of longtime Central Texas lawyer George M. Cowden, BA '53, LLB '59, and brother of George Cowden III, BA '76, JD '78.

Harold Gene Shields, of Waco, passed away May 27 at age 78. A high school golf coach, professional golfer and club pro at Preston Trail and Ridgewood Country Club, Shields was Baylor men's golf coach from 1978-96, where he led the team to several NCAA regional tournaments, coached numerous all-conference players, and was named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1994.

Barbara Ann Burke Chafin, 82, passed away May 30 in Austin. While a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, she met and married Dr. Kenneth Chafin, who became a seminary professor and pastor of South Main Baptist Church in Houston, among others. Mrs. Chafin was a writer of devotionals for Daily Guideposts. Among her survivors are daughters, Nancy Chafin, BA '78, and Ellen Chafin Wavro, BBA '85.
