Starr, three BU alums join BCM Board of Trustees
The Baylor College of Medicine added five members to its Board of Trustees, chair Mark J. Shapiro announced in January. Four of those have ties to Baylor University, including three BU alumni -- Robert Brewton, BBA '74; Sally Anderson Clark, BBA '70; and Gerald Haddock, BBA '71, JD '71 -- as well as President Ken Starr. Brewton is the president of Brewton Investment Corporation, a capital investment firm located in Houston.
A longtime community leader, Clark is involved with numerous organizations in the Houston area, including Covenant House, Ronald McDonald House and Zoo Friends of Houston. Haddock is the president of Haddock Investments, which he founded in 1999.
Nurse-midwifery program receives initial accreditation
With the use of midwives in childbirth on the rise nationwide, Baylor's Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) is among a handful of universities stepping up to fill a growing need.
LHSON's new nurse-midwifery program, which began fall 2009, allows students to progress directly from a bachelor's degree in nursing to a doctorate in nurse-midwifery. The first nurses in the country to finish the program received their degrees in May 2010 from Baylor, according to the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, which approved the program's initial acceditation earlier this year.
Only eight nursing schools in the country offer the Doctor of Nursing Practice in nurse-midwifery program, and Baylor is the only one in Texas. In its accreditation letter, the Board of Review praised Baylor's program and its coordinator, associate professor of nursing Dr. Mary Ann Faucher, "for an excellent program that will make important contributions to the underserved women and their families living in Texas, as well as those served by their mission work."
Baylor is No. 5 most influential college on Twitter
According to data compiled by Klout.com and released January 17, Baylor is the No. 5 most influential college on Twitter -- surpassed only by Stanford, Syracuse, Harvard and Wisconsin.

Accounting programs stage a comeback in Public Accounting Report rankings
Baylor University's accounting program received high rankings from Public Accounting Report's (PAR) 29th Annual Survey of Accounting Professors, published in the independent newsletter's November 2010 issue.
After a one-year absence from the PAR lists, Baylor accounting's undergraduate program ranked No. 23 in the nation; its graduate program garnered honorable mention, just missing the top 25 list.
When measured against other programs with a similar number of teaching faculty, Baylor's undergraduate accounting program came in at No. 10 and its graduate program took the No. 11 slot in the country. In the PAR groupings, Baylor falls into Group II, the mid-size category.
Nursing school dean returning to classroom, research
Dr. Judy Wright Lott, who has served as dean of Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing since 2002, stepped down from her administrative post, effective Feb. 1, to return to full-time teaching and research.
A nationally recognized expert in skin science and a veteran neonatal nurse, Lott joined the Baylor faculty as professor of nursing in 2001 from the University of Cincinnati, where she directed the neonatal nursing program. She was appointed dean in December 2002.
