Martha L. Rogers, BS '57, has recently released the second book in the series Seasons of the Heart. The third book will be on bookshelves January 2012 as well as Amelia's Journey, a prequel to the Winds Across the Prairie series. Rogers plans to complete six more books over the next three years, all works of historical Christian fiction. I have run several half-marathons, with a best time of 1:54:29. I strive to finish in the top 25 percent of the field. John King, BA '67, recently retired after serving for 11 years as the executive director of the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans. Still a consultant and trainer, King serves as a goodwill ambassador for the U.S. State Department as an expert in addictions treatment and prevention, with State- and USIA-sponsored trips to India, Brazil, Peru and the Caribbean. Dallas lawyer Ike Vanden Eykel, JD '73, has been appointed to the Texas Access to Justice Commission by the State Bar of Texas. The Supreme Court of Texas created the commission in 2001 to expand civil legal aid services for low-income Texans. Vanden Eykel is the CEO and managing partner of KoonsFuller and a renowned family law litigator. He is the immediate past president of the Dallas Bar Association and currently serves on the board of directors for the State Bar of Texas.

Dr. Paul Parsons, BA '74, of Elon, N.C., dean of the School of Communications at Elon University, received the national Administrator of the Year award at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference Aug. 10 in St. Louis. Parsons received the award, sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation, and a $10,000 prize, which he donated to Elon for need-based student scholarships. Before his 10 years at Elon, Parsons worked for a decade with United Press International and the Associated Press after 14 years at Kansas State University and two years overseas, one as a Fulbright professor in China and one as a visiting professor in Singapore. Col. Roger Labat (Ret.), MA '75, retired from the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps in 1988 after 28 years. He received a Bronze Star for his service. He then taught at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio for 20 years until 2009. Labat endowed a scholarship at Incarnate Word High School, where he was vice principal and principal for 12 years.

Greg Hunt, BA '77, released his book Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night: What to Do When God Won't Answer in October. After 30 years of congregational leadership, Hunt now serves as president of Directions, Inc., which serves people as they lead their organizations, relationships and lives. Greg and his wife, Priscilla, live in Olathe, Kan.

Patti Qualls Lacy, BSEd '77, of Normal, Ill., has authored her fourth novel, Reclaiming Lily (BethanyHouse, 384 pages). When an insidious genetic disease strikes her family, Harvard graduate Dr. Kai Chang must alert Lily, the sister Kai left on orphanage steps years earlier.

Seven Days in Utopia, a film based on Golf's Sacred Journey, a book by David Cook, BS '80, debuted in theaters this fall. Cook, a former Baylor golfer, dedicated the book to longtime Baylor golf coach Johnny Arreaga, BA '60. The family-friendly novel and movie (for which Cook co-wrote the screenplay) share a powerful message of hope, forgiveness and grace. The film stars Academy Award winner Robert Duvall and tells the story of a young golfer (played by "Friday Night Lights" actor Lucas Black) who, after a disastrous pro debut, finds himself stranded in the small town of Utopia, Texas where he is befriended by an eccentric rancher (Duvall) who helps him rediscover his way. The movie became available on DVD on Nov. 29.

Mike Cooper, BSEd '80, and David Scott, BSEd '80, retired from Midway ISD and West ISD respectively after a combined 61 years in education. As their wives both still work, they have reconnected and walk five miles twice a week at scenic Waco locations such as Cameron Park and the Waco Dam. Heather Hearn Rathnau, BM '80, MM '82, owns the company Theory Time, best known for its popular music theory workbook series by the same name, and is the Theory Time company author. Rathnau was named "Teacher of the Year" at the 2011 Texas Music Teachers Association State Convention, awarded for the highest service to and representation of TMTA and the music teaching profession, in addition to an excellent record in the teaching profession. Derek Haas, BA '91, MA '95, and Michael Brandt, BBA '91, MA '94, the writers of 2 Fast 2 Furious, 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted, released a new film, The Double, starring Richard Gere, Topher Grace, Martin Sheen and Stephen Moyer, in November. The film tells the tale of a retired CIA operative (Gere) and a young FBI agent (Grace) who team to solve the murder of a U.S. senator. The movie's co-writers added more roles for this movie; The Double was Brandt's directorial debut, and Haas had a new role as a producer for the film.

Carissa Rose Brown, BSEd '94, recently started Carissa Rose Designs, an online retailer that focuses on business casual career clothing. She began sketching her own designs at age 11. Brown and her mother, Helene Rose, often collaborated on creating unique styles. During Brown's fourth pregnancy in 2007, her mother unexpectedly passed away from an aneurism in her sleep. After several months of grieving her mother's loss, Brown found inspiration and began to pursue the dream of launching a clothing line in honor of her mother.

This is her second cross-cultural placement, as she also served as a missionary in Belgium from 2006-08.

Eric Udell, BS '10, married Brittney Carr, BSEd '11, on Aug. 27 at the Hofmann Ranch in Castroville, Texas. Eric is a mechanical engineer for Dell; Brittney, an Alpha Chi Omega alum, is currently working as a running coach and applying to graduate school for speech pathology. They reside in Carrollton, Texas.
