Happy Birthday to Frances Schmoyer Derden, AB '33, of Austin, who crossed the century mark on Aug. 12! More than 150 friends and family attended her party. Born in Waco in 1911, Derden paid her way through Baylor by serving as principal of a one-room schoolhouse beginning at age 18. After graduating from Baylor, she met and married Albert Derden, JD '28, a future Texas congressman, and continued to teach for more than 40 years. The couple had two children: Zoe Ann and Albert Jr. After retirement and the passing of her husband, Derden spent time traveling, serving at a homeless shelter and raising money for AIDS patients. She mowed her own lawn until just a couple years ago, and she still lives alone and drives herself.

Phail-Dean (Deanie) Copeland Chastain, BBA '39, celebrated her 92nd birthday on Feb. 11. She retired from teaching in 1975 and volunteered for 25 years in two hospitals. An artist, she volunteers with Hidden Angels, a group that makes blankets for children and newborns. Every day she exercises for at least one hour. She plans on living to 106, having had an aunt live to 105. Her husband, Maurice Chastain, passed away in 2002 after 62 years of marriage. Mildred Moorman Busch, BM '40, taught piano one year at Baylor and 67 years in Amarillo, Texas, where she instructed more than 2,000 Amarillo citizens. After earning her master's degree in 1953, she married husband Ted in 1956; the couple has one daughter (Kathy) and one granddaughter (Katy). Busch retired in 2008. Edgar Burks, BA '45, celebrated his 90th birthday on March 17. On March 24, he and his wife, Linnie Jane, celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Dr. Paul W. Powell, BA '56, dean emeritus of George W. Truett Theological Seminary, received the Exemplary Service Medal from San Marcos Baptist Academy May 22. Powell was presented the award during the Academy's 103rd annual commencement, at which he also delivered the address to the Class of 2011.

Dr. F. Gregory Campbell, BA '60, has retired after 25 years as president of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc. Also a graduate of Emory and Yale, Campbell has been awarded two Fulbright grants (among other awards) and previously held administrative and/or faculty positions at Yale, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Chicago.

Allene Hightower Kleweno, BA '61, and husband Walter were inducted into the 2011 Silver Horizons Senior Hall of Fame. The couple was recognized for contributing countless hours as volunteers promoting the appreciation of nature and natural history, the performing and visual arts, breast cancer awareness and philanthropy. Ambassador Abelardo L. Valdez, JD '70, has been elected president of the Council of American Ambassadors. Valdez practices international law in Washington, D.C., and San Antonio. Rev. Dr. Paul D. Owen, MA '73, PhD '77, writes, "My wife, Ella, died Sept. 12, 2010, following a two-year fight with cancer. I miss her very much and am thankful that I was able to have such a kind, caring person as my wife for more than 48 years. Our son, Daron, just completed his PhD in medical physics at Western University, London, Ontario. I am completing a five-month pastorate at Fonthill United Church replacing the minister who is on a a sabbatical. Gary Flores, BS '78, of Bellaire, Texas, is chief of anesthesiology at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. On Feb. 1, he became president of Greater Houston Anesthesiology, a group comprised of 250 anesthesiologists and 200 nurse anesthetists.

Dr. Mark W. Muesse, BA '79, the W. J. Millard Professor of Religious Studies and director of the Asian Studies Program at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., recently published his new textbook, The Hindu Traditions: A Concise Introduction (Fortress Press, 240 pages). Last September, The Teaching Company released his series of 36 lectures entitled "Confucius, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad," a comparative study of their lives and teachings, available on DVD, CD and in print. Dr. Sharon M. Shields, BSEd '80, MSEd '83, is one of five finalists for a statewide superintendent of the year award sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards. She is also the 2011 Region 12 Superintendent of the Year. Superintendent for Waco's La Vega ISD since 2006, Shields has served in various roles for La Vega ISD over the past 20 years. She has worked as an adjunct instructor for Baylor, principal and instructional leader for Waco ISD and educational specialist for ESC Region 12. She serves on the Board of the Bellmead and Waco chambers of commerce.

Ken Van Cura, BM '93, MM '04, has been named pastor of worship and music at Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. He has served at FBC Boerne [Texas] since 2008, and in other Texas churches since accepting the call to full-time worship ministry 11 years ago. Van Cura will lead worship in contemporary and blended services, including the Victory Hour, America's longest running Christian television broadcast. Dr. Michael Hunt, BA '95, of Pediatric Eye Specialists in Fort Worth, has been recognized in the New England Journal of Medicine for his role on an investigative team developing a new treatment for infants at risk for blindness due to premature birth. Retinopathy of prematurity, a leading cause of childhood blindness, is one of the most common complications of premature birth. The treatment is an injection designed as an alternative to laser therapy, which can have long-term side effects.

Kirk L. Pittard, BA '95, JD '99, was recently selected as one of the 19 Best Lawyers in Dallas in Appellate Law by D Magazine and was named a Texas Lawyer Rising Star for 2011, his seventh year in a row. Pittard is a partner at Kelly, Durham & Pittard, LLP in Dallas.

Dr. Robert Zheng, EDD '98, recently was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the educational psychology department at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He has authored four books and published 40 publications in the areas of online learning, multimedia and cognition.

Matthew Wright, BA '98, received the Outstanding Young Lawyer Award from the American Bar Association for his work in the non-profit sector. His fundraising helped provide free mental healthcare for more than 12,000 soldiers and their families. Wright is the vice president for development at Scott & White Healthcare Foundation in Temple, Texas.

After completing medical school and a pediatric residency, Stephanie DeLeon, BA '02, and her family have settled in the Oklahoma City area. On faculty for the medical school at the University of Oklahoma, she's also the inpatient medical director at Children's Hospital. They welcomed Olivia Ann to the family in Oct. 2010. I'm proud of the bristles, but I have plans to shave before the next Baylor wedding that I attend (which will be in approx. half an hour). I have no future plans for other facial hair, but I admit I've always dreamed of a sweet, sweet Steve Harvey or Sam Elliot 'stache, even though I fear I don't have the lip acreage to pull it off. Michael Bracken, BA '05, of Waco, contributed a chapter to the writing textbook Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction (Headline Books). A prolific and oft-published short-story writer, his chapter is "I Write Short Stories."

Megan Reese, FCS '08, completed her master's degree in forensic psychology from the Chicago School of Psychology in 2010. Amanda Marie Gonzales, BBA '08, married Hunter Price Forestier on Feb. 5 in Houston. Amanda is a marketing manager, and Hunter is a nuclear medicine technologist and technical territory manager for the same medical imaging company. The couple resides in Houston.

Nicole Marrett, BA '09, recently started Radiant Cosmetics, a makeup line whose vision is to raise awareness and funds for human trafficking. Twenty percent of all profits go directly to Free The Captives, a Houston-based organization. The company is involved in ending human trafficking in Austin and Houston. Andrew S. Gerhards, BA '10, and Louise A. McCartney, BFA '09, were married June 10 in Katy, Texas. They bought their first home in Anaheim, Calif. Andrew is working at Disneyland and Louise is acting and modeling. "We met while working on Baylor professor Chris Hansen's Endings movie set. John Anderson, PhD '10, is a visiting assistant professor of religion at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. Anderson has also been appointed chair of the program unit devoted to the book of Genesis for the Society of Biblical Literature and will be presenting his paper "The Unsettling God of Genesis: What and Whose Theology" at the group's annual meeting. He has recently published an article and book review, and his book, Jacob and the Divine Trickster: A Theology of Deception and YHWH's Fidelity to the Ancestral Promise in the Jacob Cycle, has recently been published (Eisenbrauns, 210 pages).
