Angus Stewart McSwain Jr

Angus Stewart McSwain Jr., JD '49, dean emeritus of Baylor Law School and Master Teacher, died May 29. He was 87. McSwain spent three years in the Army Corps of Engineers and was discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1946. He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M in 1947, was first in his class at Baylor Law and later earned an LL.M. from the University of Michigan Law School. He served as a professor of law at Baylor from 1949-65, when he became dean. McSwain led the law school for the next 19 years -- at that time, the longest tenure of any dean in the law school's history. Throughout his tenure as dean, Baylor Law achieved and maintained a high standard of academic excellence. McSwain emphasized classroom teaching as the law school's primary objective. He returned to full-time teaching in 1984 and was named The Gov. Bill and Vara Faye Daniel Chair of Property Law in 1985. In 1990, he was designated a Master Teacher, the highest honor granted to Baylor faculty members. Although he officially retired in 1994, he continued to teach until 2008, a total of 59 years.
