Fresh Faces:

November 30, 2009

Baylor basketball fans might not be the only ones who need a scorecard this winter at the Ferrell Center; it may take even men's head coach Scott Drew and women's head coach Kim Mulkey awhile to get to know their players this year. Each squad returns just six letterwinners from a year ago. Six new freshmen joined the men this fall as part of the nation's No. 17 recruiting class according to Rivals.com, while the women welcomed five in compiling what ESPN labeled the top class in the country; each team also added a transfer.
After the Lady Bears' Sweet 16 finish last year, you already know returnees like Kelli Griffin, Melissa Jones and the team's lone senior, Morghan Medlock. Likewise, following the Bears' run to the 2009 NIT Championship Game, you remember returning starters Tweety Carter, LaceDarius Dunn and Josh Lomers.
Here are the new faces to watch for:
Women's basketball:
Brittney Griner, P: The nation's consensus top high school player and arguably Baylor's most decorated recruit in any sport ever. At 6-8 with an 88-inch wingspan, dunked the ball 52 times in 32 games as a senior, averaging 33.0 points, 15.5 rebounds and 11.7 blocks in her final year at Houston's Nimitz High School. Expected to step into Baylor's starting line-up.
Mariah Chandler, F: Named McDonald's All-America honorable mention even after missing her entire junior year at Southwest Atlanta [Ga.] Christian Academy due to ACL injury. Ranked the No. 3 forward in the nation by Scout.com and the No. 18 player overall by ESPNU HoopGurlz.
Kimetria Hayden, G: Named the Dallas Morning News' player of the year as a junior after averaging 17.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists and leading Dallas' Lincoln High to the Class 4A state title. Played in only six games as a senior due to a torn meniscus in her right knee.
Jordan Madden, G: Ranked among the top 60 players nationally by ESPNU HoopGurlz. Led East Poinsett County High in Lepanto, Ark., to the 3A state finals as a senior.
Brooklyn Pope, F/G: Fort Worth native (Dunbar High) transferred to Baylor after playing in 29 games her freshman year at Rutgers. Last year was rated the No. 9 incoming freshman by HoopGurlz.com and ranked as the No. 1 forward by Scout.com. 2008 McDonald's All-American and Parade All-American.
Shanay Washington, G: Parade All-American ranked among top five high school players nationally by two scouting services. Her jersey from Austin's Del Valle High is one of 25 displayed in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame's Ring of Honor.
Men's basketball:
Ekpe Udoh , F/C: 6-10 junior sat out last season after transferring from Michigan where he played in every game for two seasons. Named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team as a sophomore. Fourth in Wolverine history in career blocks despite playing just two years. Expected to start at PF this season.
Nolan Dennis, G: North Richland Hills, Texas, native rated No. 44 nationally in the ESPNU 100 and No. 15 at his position nationally by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Originally committed to Memphis but was granted his full release in April 2009.
AJ Walton, G: Two-time all-state selection at Little Rock's Hall High. Led team to state championship in 2008 and runner-up finish in 2009.
Cory Jefferson, F: Ranked No. 33 nationally and No. 11 among power forwards by Rivals.com. All-time leading shot blocker in Killeen [Texas] High School history. TABC Class 4A Player of the Year as a senior.
Givon Crump, F: Ranked No. 142 nationally in Rivals.com's Class of 2009 and 31st-rated small forward in ESPNU 100. Helped lead Brewster [N.H.] Academy to back-to-back berths in the National Prep Championship semifinals.
Dragan Sekelja, C: 7-footer from Croatia gives Bears another big body in the paint. Led Cibona Zagreb to third-place finish at Croatian Junior National championships. As member of U16 National Team, participated in 2007 European Championships.
Oscar Griffin, G: Walk-on averaged 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals last season for Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J.
