Even Longhorns Support Baylor

May 28, 2009

At the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale held in Fort Worth in March, Baylor was one of four charities that benefited from the auction of donated livestock. In Baylor's case, a longhorn was donated by Jean Brown, widow of Terry Brown, a rancher and architect who served as an adjunct professor in Baylor's Family and Consumer Sciences department. The longhorn was auctioned and donated back several times until the funds raised totaled more than $75,000 in support of the Terry L. Brown Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at Baylor, which supports deserving juniors and seniors majoring in art with an emphasis in architecture.

Rob Fenza of West Chester, Pa., and Joe Valentine of Lott, Texas, both fellow ranchers and friends of the Browns, came up with the idea for the fund because of Brown's passion for interacting with students and teaching. A former Fulbright Scholar in Vienna, Austria, Brown served as an instructor at several universities, including Baylor. His first love was education, and he spent a great deal of time helping students further their knowledge of architecture and design.

Brown passed away on June 8, 2008, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. One of his passions was raising Texas Longhorn cattle, and his uncle, Frank Doherty, was one of the most famous Longhorn breeders of all time. Jean Brown said by adding to the fund in this creative way, family and friends were able to honor Terry's memory while combining two of his greatest loves--cattle and education.
