Civil Rights Tour Heads South

A total of 17 students and four faculty/staff members took a week-long "Civil Rights Tour" during spring break, trekking across the South in what amounted to a classroom on wheels. Among several locations, the group visited Little Rock Central High School, attended a historically African American church service in Memphis, toured the National Civil Rights Museum, and spoke with one of Ole Miss' first African American students. The tour visited eight cities in five states (not including Texas). While traveling between cities, the groups had some very frank discussions on some of the race issues facing America today. 

"We are addressing very actively some of the poverty issues that are kind of systemic of and a part of a system that oppresses individuals within our society," said Karin Klinger, MSED '05, associate director of Student Activities for Organizations and Service. "We're asking the hard questions, and helping students ask those questions, not only of themselves, but also of the systems in which they live."
